Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The board suspended Richard and Lucas before noon.

Their corporate cards were frozen.

Their access badges were disabled.

Lucas stood in the lobby of the company bearing his name while security collected his executive credentials.

He looked at Willow with pure hatred.

“This is because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut.”

Willow stared at him.

“No.”

“This is because you couldn’t keep your hand to yourself.”

She walked away.

At Donovan Auto, Michael began sorting documents for federal investigators.

Willow searched the founder ledger again.

Near the back, she discovered an old photograph tucked between pages.

Three people stood in front of the original Donovan Freight warehouse.

Patrick Donovan.

Charles Sterling.

And a young woman.

Willow turned the photograph over.

EVELYN NORTH.

1979.

Michael saw it and became very still.

“Who is she?”

He took the photograph gently.

“Your grandmother’s sister.”

Willow frowned.

“I never knew Grandma had a sister.”

“She disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

Michael nodded.

“After your grandfather died.”

Evelyn had been the bookkeeper for Donovan Freight.

She knew every account.

Every contract.

Every ownership arrangement.

Three weeks after Patrick Donovan’s fatal car crash, Evelyn vanished.

Police assumed she left Chicago.

Michael had never believed it.

Willow looked at the name again.

Evelyn North.

Harbor North Trust.

Her heart began pounding.

“Dad.”

“I know.”

Michael sat down slowly.

“If Richard has been sending money to something using Evelyn’s name…”

He stopped.

Helena entered carrying coffee.

“What happened?”

Willow handed her the photograph.

Helena’s face changed.

“I’ve seen her.”

Michael looked up sharply.

“Where?”

“At the Sterling house.”

Willow stared at her.

Helena explained.

Three years earlier, she had helped organize a charity dinner at Marion and Richard’s Lake Forest estate.

In an upstairs hallway, she had noticed an old framed photograph.

Marion with another woman.

The woman was Evelyn.

On the back, someone had written SISTERS BY CHOICE.

Michael stood.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because Marion always claimed she had never met Evelyn.”

A long silence followed.

Willow looked from her father to the photograph.

Patrick Donovan died.

Evelyn disappeared.

Charles Sterling erased the Donovan name.

And decades later, Richard had quietly transferred ninety-six million dollars into a trust bearing Evelyn’s surname.

This was no longer just corporate theft.
