Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lied

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lied

The flashing red and blue lights reflected across the marble floors as two sheriff's deputies entered the Caldwell estate. Adrian immediately switched to the role of the concerned husband.

"It was an accident," he said calmly. "She stood up too quickly. The glass slipped."

Nearly everyone at the dining table nodded.

"It happened so fast."

"We couldn't really see."

"I think she startled him."

The deputies listened without interruption before one of them turned toward me.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

Blood still dripped onto my blouse.

"I need medical attention," I answered quietly. "And I'd like to report felony assault."

The room became silent again.

Then Maya cleared her throat.

"Officer... there's something everyone forgot."

Every eye turned toward her.

She pointed toward the corner of the dining room.

"The security camera."

Adrian's face instantly lost its color.

His father looked up so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.

Eleanor whispered, "No..."

One deputy followed Maya's finger.

A small black security camera blinked steadily above the doorway.

"Who owns the recording system?" the deputy asked.

No one answered.

Finally Adrian muttered, "It's... probably disconnected."

Maya shook her head.

"It isn't."

She looked directly at the officers.

"I know because I reviewed yesterday's footage after Eleanor accused one of the housekeepers of stealing."

The deputy immediately requested access to the surveillance room.

Adrian stepped forward.

"The system has been malfunctioning."

"Sir," the deputy interrupted firmly, "if you interfere with evidence, you'll create a much bigger problem."

Within minutes, an officer returned carrying a portable monitor.

The video began to play.

There was no argument about what happened.

No blurry angle.

No hidden view.

The camera captured Adrian standing.

Picking up the heavy crystal glass.

Looking directly at me.

Then deliberately smashing it against my head.

No accident.

No self-defense.

Just violence.

The room was completely silent.

The deputy stopped the recording.

"Mr. Caldwell," he said, "please place your hands behind your back."

Eleanor screamed.

"You can't arrest my son!"

The deputy calmly replied, "Ma'am, we just watched him commit aggravated assault."

As Adrian was handcuffed, he looked at me with hatred.

"This isn't over."

I met his eyes without fear.

May you like

"No," I answered.

"It's finally beginning."
