Chapter 19 - The Table I Chose

Three years after the assault, I hosted Thanksgiving.
For years, the idea of a large family dinner made me uncomfortable.
Then Maya suggested reclaiming it.
So I invited twelve people.
Friends.
Coworkers.
Sofia.
Natalie flew down from Portland.
Emily came with her husband.
My brother brought two pies and forgot the whipped cream.
Nobody cared.
My dining table was not antique.
It was not imported.
It had scratches near one corner because I bought it from a young couple moving to Seattle.
The plates did not match.
That was intentional.
When everyone sat down, I looked around the room.
Nobody there wanted anything from me.
Nobody was calculating my property value.
Nobody cared whose name was on the deed.
Maya lifted her glass.
“To Claire.”
I groaned.
“Please don’t.”
She ignored me.
“To owning your house, your life, and apparently eleven different wineglasses that do not match.”
Everyone laughed.
I laughed too.
Then Sofia tapped her glass.
“I want to say something.”
The room quieted.
She looked at me.
“The night at the vineyard, I almost stayed silent.”
I shook my head.
“But you didn’t.”
“I know.”
She swallowed.
“But I want everyone here to understand something.”
“I did not speak because I was fearless.”
“I spoke because I watched everybody else choose fear.”
Natalie nodded.
Emily looked down at the table.
Sofia continued.
“And sometimes seeing twenty people do the wrong thing makes the right thing suddenly obvious.”
No one spoke for a moment.
Then I raised my glass.
“To the person who speaks.”
Emily lifted hers.
“To the person who calls.”
Natalie smiled.
“To the person who leaves.”
Maya raised hers higher.
“To the person who says no.”
We drank.
And somehow, without planning it, we transformed the worst dinner of my life into something else.
