Chapter 8 - Eleanor Comes to My Door

Eleanor arrived at Maya’s apartment on Thursday morning.
She should not have known where I was staying.
That alone terrified me.
Maya checked the door camera.
“She’s outside.”
I called Rachel.
Rachel told me not to open the door.
Eleanor knocked again.
“Claire.”
Her voice was calm.
“I only want five minutes.”
I remained silent.
Then she said something that made me freeze.
“I know you found the papers.”
I stepped closer to the door.
Maya shook her head.
Do not open it.
Eleanor continued.
“Your husband is frightened.”
“Charles is frightened.”
“And frightened men make very poor decisions.”
I activated the recording function on my phone.
“What do you want?”
Eleanor heard me through the door.
Her voice softened.
“I want to protect everyone.”
“From what?”
“From consequences that cannot be undone.”
I almost laughed.
“Your son hit me in the head with a plate.”
“You survived.”
The casual cruelty of those two words stunned me.
Eleanor kept talking.
“If you refuse to cooperate, prosecutors will destroy Adrian.”
“Investigators will destroy Charles.”
“Employees will lose jobs.”
“The vineyard may collapse.”
“And all because you refuse to see the larger picture.”
I looked at Maya.
She looked horrified.
“The larger picture?”
“Yes.”
“Families require sacrifice.”
“Why is the sacrifice always mine?”
Eleanor said nothing.
I pressed harder.
“Why did you need my condo?”
Silence.
Then she answered.
“We needed temporary collateral.”
There it was.
Not a denial.
A confession.
“You forged my signature.”
“I did not.”
“Adrian did.”
Another silence.
“Adrian made a mistake.”
“Charles knew.”
“We were protecting what generations built.”
“With my property.”
“You married into this family.”
“My condo did not.”
Her voice changed.
The patience disappeared.
“If this becomes public, Claire, you will regret it too.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It is reality.”
I heard footsteps behind Eleanor.
Then another voice.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
A police officer.
Maya had called them while Eleanor was speaking.
For the first time, Eleanor lost control.
“You called the police again?”
“Yes.”
The hallway became silent.
Then I heard the officer tell her to step away from the door.
Before leaving, Eleanor spoke loudly enough for me to hear.
“You have no idea what you are tearing apart.”
I looked at the recording screen on my phone.
May you like
She was wrong.
I finally understood exactly what I was tearing apart.
