Chapter 16 - The Recording Nobody Expected
The prosecution introduced Michael’s complete recording on the third day.
Most people had already heard the famous sections through news reports.
They knew Sylvia’s insult.
They knew David refused an ambulance.
They knew he threatened Anna.
But the complete recording contained something the public had never heard.
Thirty minutes before the shove, David had been speaking with colleagues near the dining room.
He was laughing.
Anna was still inside the kitchen.
Michael’s phone captured David saying something quietly.
“My wife’s finally learning that marriage isn’t a democracy.”
A colleague laughed nervously.
David continued.
“I handle the money.”
“My mother handles the house.”
“Anna handles whatever we tell her to handle.”
Another voice asked whether Anna minded.
David answered.
“She complains.”
Then he laughed.
“But where is she going to go?”
The courtroom became painfully still.
Anna stared at the floor.
Hearing it privately had hurt.
Hearing it before strangers hurt differently.
Not because it embarrassed her.
Because it proved how casually David had discussed her captivity.
Then came the financial comment.
“She signed away most of the house anyway.”
Michael had asked whether Anna knew.
David replied.
“She knows what I need her to know.”
David’s attorney tried to characterize the comments as jokes.
The prosecutor asked Michael whether David appeared to be joking.
Michael answered carefully.
“He was smiling.”
“Does smiling mean joking?”
“No.”
“What did it mean?”
Michael looked toward David.
“It meant he was proud.”
Anna saw David’s face change.
For the first time, humiliation belonged to him.
Not the humiliation of being mocked.
The humiliation of being seen accurately.
After court adjourned, Anna walked through the courthouse hallway.
Reporters shouted questions.
She ignored them.
Then one question made her stop.
“Mrs. Mercer, do you think your father’s position changed the outcome?”
Anna turned.
“My father’s position changed one thing.”
Cameras lifted.
“It made my husband afraid after the phone call.”
She paused.
