Chapter 5 - The Story Begins to Crack

Christmas morning arrived without celebration.
Anna woke inside a hospital room at 4:37 a.m.
Her first question was about Grace.
A nurse smiled.
“Stable.”
Anna closed her eyes.
One word had never meant so much.
Her second question was about David.
“He tried to come upstairs.”
The nurse adjusted Anna’s IV.
“Security removed him.”
“Did he cause trouble?”
“He said he was your husband and attorney.”
Anna gave a weak laugh.
“That sounds like him.”
Her father was asleep in a chair beside the window.
His tie was loose.
His shoes were still on.
Anna watched him for several seconds.
Growing up, she had seen her father handle death threats, national controversies, impossible cases, and political attacks with almost unnatural calm.
She had forgotten that he could look old.
Tired.
Human.
His eyes opened.
“You’re awake.”
“Grace?”
“Still stable.”
Jonathan stood and brought her water.
Anna drank carefully.
Then she asked the question she feared.
“What happens now?”
Her father looked toward the hallway.
“That depends on what the evidence shows.”
“You know what it shows.”
“I know what you told me.”
Anna understood immediately.
He was being careful.
Not cold.
Careful.
He would not become part of the case.
He would not influence prosecutors.
He would not destroy David through power.
He would stand beside his daughter while ordinary laws did the work.
Anna appreciated him more for that than any phone call he could have made.
At 6:10 a.m., Detective Lena Ortiz entered the room.
She introduced herself.
Then she asked Jonathan if she could speak with Anna privately.
Jonathan left without hesitation.
Detective Ortiz sat down.
“I have reviewed the recording.”
Anna nodded.
“We also have multiple witness statements.”
Anna looked toward the door.
“Is Sylvia being arrested?”
“The investigation is ongoing.”
Anna waited.
The detective continued.
“Your husband’s conduct is also being reviewed.”
“He stopped me from calling 911.”
“Yes.”
“He broke my phone.”
“Yes.”
“He threatened to make me look unstable.”
“Yes.”
Anna looked down at her hands.
Detective Ortiz studied her.
“Has anything like this happened before?”
Anna wanted to say no.
The word almost escaped automatically.
Then she remembered all the smaller things.
David controlling their bank account.
David reading her text messages.
David deciding which friends were bad influences.
David telling her she was emotional whenever she disagreed.
David removing her name from certain financial documents.
Sylvia showing up without warning.
David laughing when Anna asked for privacy.
Maybe violence had not started with the shove.
Maybe violence had simply been the first thing impossible to rename.
Anna looked at the detective.
“Yes.”
May you like
Detective Ortiz opened her notebook.
“Then we should start at the beginning.”
