Chapter 1: The Slap That Broke the Marriage

Chapter 1: The Slap That Broke the Marriage

Margaret's chair crashed backward as she stood.

Her face twisted with pure rage.

For one brief second, Julia expected the older woman to gasp, perhaps complain about her ruined dress.

Instead, Margaret looked directly at eight-year-old Mia as though she were something filthy.

"You little piece of garbage."

The words echoed across the ballroom.

Several guests visibly flinched.

Mia froze.

"I... I'm sorry, Grandma..."

She reached out with trembling hands.

"I didn't—"

Margaret didn't let her finish.

With both hands, she shoved the child backward.

Mia stumbled over the chair leg and crashed onto the polished floor.

Gasps rippled through the room.

Before anyone could react, Margaret tilted the dinner plate.

The remaining mashed potatoes slid first.

Then the gravy.

Green beans.

Chicken.

Everything landed on the crying little girl.

"There."

"Now you look exactly like what you are."

"Garbage."

Julia's body moved before her mind did.

She rushed toward Mia.

"What is wrong with you?" she screamed.

"She's a child!"

Margaret pointed a shaking finger at Julia.

"And you're the reason she's useless!"

"You raised her without manners."

"Without class."

"Just like your side of the family."

Julia slowly stood.

For the first time in nine years of marriage...

She didn't apologize.

"Don't ever touch my daughter again."

The room became even quieter.

Margaret laughed.

"Oh?"

"And what exactly are you going to do about it?"

Before Julia could answer, another familiar voice cut through the silence.

"Mom."

Daniel Miller.

Her husband.

Relief washed over Julia.

He had seen everything.

Surely...

Surely he would protect Mia.

He walked directly toward them.

Julia looked at him hopefully.

"Daniel..."

"Your mother pushed Mia."

"Look at her."

"Our daughter is covered in food."

Daniel barely glanced at Mia.

Instead, he looked at Margaret's stained dress.

"Mom..."

"Are you alright?"

Julia blinked.

"What?"

Margaret sighed dramatically.

"I've never been so humiliated."

"That child attacked me."

Julia stared in disbelief.

"Attacked you?"

"She bumped your plate!"

Daniel's face hardened.

"You should've taught her better."

Julia felt something inside her crack.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

"My mother has worked too hard to be embarrassed like this."

Julia couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Our daughter is crying!"

"She was pushed!"

Daniel stepped closer.

"Stop making a scene."

"I'm making a scene?"

"She assaulted Mia!"

"Enough!"

Julia refused to back down.

"No."

"You apologize to your daughter."

"You tell your mother to apologize."

Margaret scoffed.

"I'll never apologize to trash."

Julia's hand instinctively reached for Mia's shoulder.

"My daughter isn't trash."

Margaret smiled coldly.

"No."

"She's worse."

Daniel suddenly grabbed Julia's arm.

"Say you're sorry."

Julia slowly pulled her arm away.

"No."

His expression darkened.

"I said apologize."

"No."

The slap exploded across the ballroom.

The sound echoed louder than the music ever had.

Julia stumbled sideways.

Her cheek burned instantly.

Several women gasped.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Mia screamed.

"Mommy!"

Julia touched her face.

She looked at Daniel.

The man she'd loved.

The man she'd defended for years.

The father of her child.

He wasn't shocked.

He wasn't sorry.

He simply stared at her as though she'd deserved it.

Something inside Julia finally died.

She no longer saw her husband.

Only a stranger.

Without saying another word, she reached into her purse.

Pulled out her phone.

And dialed one number.

When the person answered, Julia spoke only one sentence.

"It's time."

"I need you now."

She ended the call.

Daniel laughed.

"Calling your parents?"

"They can't help you."

Julia looked him directly in the eyes.

"No."

"I'm calling the one person who owns everything your family thinks belongs to them."

May you like

For the first time that evening...

Daniel's smile disappeared.
