Chapter 2: The Truth Walks Into the Ballroom

Chapter 2: The Truth Walks Into the Ballroom
Seven minutes later...
The ballroom doors opened.
Every head turned.
A tall man in a charcoal suit entered alongside two attorneys and a uniformed sheriff's deputy.
The room immediately recognized him.
Edward Carter.
Founder of Carter Development Group.
One of the wealthiest businessmen in Ohio.
Margaret's confident smile vanished.
Rachel whispered nervously,
"Why is Mr. Carter here?"
Daniel frowned.
"He must be looking for another wedding."
Edward ignored everyone.
He walked straight toward Julia.
Then...
To everyone's astonishment...
He hugged her.
"I'm sorry I couldn't get here faster."
Julia finally allowed herself to cry.
Margaret stared.
"You know him?"
Edward slowly turned.
"I do."
"And who exactly are you?" Margaret demanded.
Edward answered calmly.
"I'm the owner of the company your family has proudly claimed to run for the last twelve years."
Silence.
Daniel laughed awkwardly.
"My father is CEO."
Edward shook his head.
"No."
"Your father manages my investment."
"I own seventy-eight percent."
"I've simply allowed him to stay in charge."
Margaret's face turned white.
Edward looked toward Mia.
The little girl still stood covered in gravy.
His expression changed immediately.
He crouched beside her.
"Oh, sweetheart..."
"Who did this?"
Mia looked nervously toward Margaret.
Edward stood.
Very slowly.
His voice became ice.
"Mrs. Miller."
"Did you assault a child?"
Margaret stammered.
"It was... discipline."
The sheriff stepped forward.
"I watched the security footage with hotel management."
"What happened wasn't discipline."
"It was assault."
Guests began whispering.
Phones quietly appeared.
Someone had already uploaded the video.
Daniel suddenly panicked.
"Wait..."
"This is a misunderstanding."
Edward nodded toward the attorneys.
The senior lawyer opened a folder.
"Daniel Miller."
"As of this moment, you and your father are suspended pending investigation for financial misconduct involving Carter Development."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Edward looked disappointed.
"I trusted your family."
"You rewarded that trust by stealing."
Margaret grabbed Daniel's arm.
"Say something!"
Daniel couldn't.
His knees nearly gave out.
Edward wasn't finished.
He looked toward Julia.
"You sent me copies of the financial records months ago."
"I didn't want to believe them."
"But today..."
He glanced toward Mia.
"I believe everything."
Julia had quietly discovered missing company funds almost a year earlier while helping Daniel organize tax documents.
She had never reported them.
Until tonight.
The call she'd made wasn't asking for help.

It was giving permission.
Permission to act.
