Chapter 10 - Before the Loan

Claire agreed to a video call with Maya present.

She appeared on-screen from a hotel room, pale and exhausted, wearing an oversized sweatshirt.

Rachel had never seen her look afraid before.

Maya began carefully.

"Claire, I represent Rachel, not you."

"I understand."

"You may want your own attorney."

"I already called one."

"Good."

Maya glanced at Rachel.

"Tell us what you meant when you said the loan wasn't first."

Claire looked down at her hands.

"Mom has been moving money through the business for years."

Daniel, who joined the call from his attorney's office, went completely still.

"What?"

Claire looked at her brother through the screen.

"You knew some of it."

"No, I didn't."

"You knew the company paid the family trust consulting fees."

"That's legal."

"Some of them were."

Daniel frowned.

Claire continued.

"But Mom also used fake vendor accounts."

Thomas leaned forward.

"For what purpose?"

"To move cash out before creditors could reach it."

Daniel swore under his breath.

Maya raised a hand.

"Claire, how do you know this?"

"I helped with bookkeeping when I was in college."

"How long ago?"

"Eight years."

"And you saw fake vendors then?"

"I saw one."

Claire swallowed.

"Mom told me it was tax planning."

Rachel almost laughed at the familiar pattern.

Linda always had a respectable phrase for something ugly.

Discipline.

Family loyalty.

Tax planning.

Protecting everyone.

Claire wiped her eyes.

"After Dad died, she got worse."

Rachel had met Daniel's father only twice before his sudden heart attack seven years earlier.

He had been quiet, kind, and perpetually tired around Linda.

"What changed?" Rachel asked.

"She became trustee."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"And she realized nobody was checking her."

Daniel shook his head.

"The trust has an accountant."

"An accountant Mom hires."

"There's an annual report."

"That she prepares."

Daniel leaned back.

His face looked empty.

Claire continued.

"When your business started failing, Mom used the trust to guarantee the refinance."

"I know that."

"But the trust didn't have enough liquid collateral."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Claire looked at Rachel.

"That's why she needed Rachel."

Rachel felt her pulse in her throat.

"Why?"

Claire took a breath.

"Because Rachel inherited part of her grandmother's property three years ago."

Rachel stared.

Her grandmother had left her a one-third interest in eighty acres of farmland outside Cedar Grove.

Rachel barely thought about it.

Her uncle leased the land to a neighboring farmer, and Rachel received a small annual payment.

"My land?"

Thomas's expression hardened.

"How would Linda even know about that?"

Rachel answered before Claire could.

"Our tax returns."

The lease income appeared every year.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire nodded.

"The loan package lists Rachel's land interest as part of the household net worth."

Rachel's stomach turned.

"Can they take it?"

Maya answered.

"Not merely because it appears on a financial statement."

"Then why use it?"

"To make the application stronger."

Claire spoke again.

"There was another document."

Rachel looked at her.

"What document?"

Claire hesitated.

"A marital property consent."

Daniel's head snapped up.

"There wasn't supposed to be one."

Claire stared at him.

"There was."

The room went silent.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"You knew?"

"No."

"You just said there wasn't supposed to be one."

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

"Mom asked whether Rachel would sign a consent."

"When?"

"February."

"And what did you say?"

Daniel's shame answered before his words did.

"I said you probably wouldn't."

Rachel felt something inside her crack quietly.

"Why wouldn't I?"

"Because you already wanted me to close the company."

"I wanted you to stop borrowing money to save it."

"Exactly."

"So your mother forged the answer she wanted."

Daniel whispered, "I didn't know."

Claire looked down.

"I think she assumed if the company recovered, nobody would ever look closely."

Thomas asked, "And if it didn't?"

Claire did not answer.

She did not have to.

Rachel would have been tied to a financial structure she had never agreed to.

Her identity had been used to make a collapsing business appear stronger.

Linda had needed Rachel's marriage, Rachel's records, and Rachel's silence.

Then Rachel remembered the recorded kitchen conversation.

She knows enough to become inconvenient.

The words changed meaning.

"I asked Daniel about a bank statement two weeks ago."

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel continued.

"There was a payment from Parker Custom Millwork to something called Cedar Consulting."

Daniel frowned.

"I told you it was an equipment consultant."

"I know."

Rachel looked at Claire.

"Was it?"

Claire's face went white.

"No."

"What was it?"

"One of Mom's vendors."

Daniel stood so abruptly his chair rolled backward.

"How much?"

Rachel answered.

"Thirty-eight thousand."

Daniel stared at the wall.

"That was the payroll reserve."

Claire nodded.

"Mom moved it."

Daniel looked sick.

Maya asked Claire where the money went.

"I don't know."

"Can Melissa prove it?"

"Probably."

"Why hasn't she gone to the police?"

Claire's eyes filled again.

"Because Mom has something on her."

"What?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

The call ended twenty minutes later.

Daniel remained on screen after Claire disconnected.

Rachel could see he wanted to say something.

She did not help him.

Finally, he whispered, "I thought I was saving the company."

Rachel looked at him.

"You were saving the story you told yourself about the company."

Daniel flinched.

"And every time reality got in the way, your mother gave you someone else to blame."

"Rachel."

"First the contractors."

Her voice remained steady.

"Then the bank."

"Then me."

"And when Lily got caught in the middle, you still protected the story."

Daniel had no answer.

After the call, Thomas closed the laptop.

Rachel stared at the dark screen.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Lily asleep in Thomas's backyard swing from earlier that afternoon.

Rachel's blood went cold.

Below the photograph was a message.
