Chapter 2 - The Video

Thomas Bennett arrived at the hospital wearing work boots, a navy jacket, and the expression Rachel remembered from childhood whenever something serious had happened and he did not want to scare her by showing how serious he thought it was.

He hugged Rachel first.

Then he crouched in front of Lily.

"Hey, bug."

Lily held up the sticker on Rachel's wrist as if it explained everything.

Thomas smiled at her.

"That's a good one."

Daniel stood near the wall.

"Mr. Bennett."

Thomas looked at him but did not answer immediately.

That silence was worse than yelling.

"Daniel."

Rachel handed Lily to her father and stepped into the hallway with her phone.

"It recorded."

Thomas's eyes sharpened.

"Everything?"

"I don't know."

Daniel followed them out.

"Rachel, maybe we should watch it at home."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because Lily needs sleep, and everybody's upset."

Thomas shifted Lily higher on his shoulder.

"Then Rachel can watch it while Lily sleeps at my house."

Daniel frowned.

"Your house?"

Rachel had not decided that yet.

Her father had.

And in that moment, she knew he was right.

"Yes."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Rachel, come on."

"I'm not taking her back to Linda's house."

"It's our house too."

Rachel stared at him.

The kitchen belonged to Daniel's parents, technically.

They had moved into the attached guest wing six months earlier after Daniel's company hit a rough patch and Linda offered them a temporary place to stay.

Temporary had quietly turned into indefinite.

"Then you can stay there."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You're making a decision while you're angry."

"No."

Rachel lifted the phone.

"I'm making a decision while I can still remember exactly what I saw."

The video began with Lily laughing at something off camera.

Rachel's own voice drifted in from the counter.

There were ordinary sounds for nearly eighteen minutes.

Plates.

Conversation.

A cabinet closing.

Then Linda's voice became clearer.

"Daniel, I am not discussing this again."

Rachel stopped the video.

She looked at her husband.

"Discussing what?"

Daniel's face lost color.

"I don't remember."

Thomas spoke quietly.

"Play it."

Rachel pressed the screen again.

Daniel's recorded voice followed.

"You said after the refinance, it would be done."

Linda answered.

"It would be done if your wife stopped asking questions."

Rachel's stomach tightened.

On the video, Rachel herself was still at the counter humming to Lily, apparently too far away to hear the conversation occurring near the dining table.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"She doesn't know anything."

Linda said, "She knows enough to become inconvenient."

Rachel stopped the video again.

This time, no one spoke.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"What refinance?"

Daniel shook his head.

"This has nothing to do with what happened tonight."

Rachel laughed once.

It was not a happy sound.

"Then explain it."

"Not here."

"You keep saying that."

"Because we're in a hospital hallway."

"Our daughter is in a hospital because of your mother."

Daniel looked toward Lily.

"Please lower your voice."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Don't tell her how to speak right now."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Rachel pressed play.

For another minute, the conversation blurred under kitchen noise.

Then Linda said something that made all three adults freeze.

"If she takes Lily and walks out, you lose everything."

Daniel's recorded response was almost a whisper.

"I know."

Rachel stared at him.

Her hands began to shake.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked trapped.

"It's complicated."

"Make it simple."

"My family's trust has conditions."

Thomas frowned.

"What conditions?"

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Family residency."

"What does that mean?"

"It means certain distributions are tied to me maintaining primary residence on the property."

Rachel blinked.

"You told me we moved there because the company needed cash."

"It did."

"You never told me money was tied to us staying there."

"I was going to."

"When?"

Daniel had no answer.

Rachel resumed the video.

The blue cup rolled across the kitchen floor.

Lily squealed.

Linda's chair scraped.

The next three seconds were chaotic.

The mug tipped.

Coffee fell.

Lily screamed.

Rachel rushed into frame.

Then Linda's voice came through clearly.

"I told her to leave things alone."

Rachel paused the image.

There it was.

Linda's face.

The mug angled downward.

Lily on the floor.

Daniel in the doorway.

Thomas looked at the screen for a long time.

"Send that to me."

Daniel immediately spoke.

"Rachel, don't start sending this around."

She stared at him.

"Why not?"

"Because once you do, you can't take it back."

"That's the point."

"You don't know the whole situation."

Thomas extended his hand.

"Rachel."

She AirDropped the video to him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Thomas saved it twice.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Now there are two copies."

Daniel's mouth tightened.

"You think I'm going to delete it?"

Thomas did not blink.

"I think fear makes people do things they swear they would never do."

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

Rachel returned to the exam room.

The nurse was helping Lily color on the paper covering the bed.

For ten minutes, Rachel forced herself to focus on nothing but her daughter.

When they were discharged, Daniel followed them to the parking lot.

"Rachel, please."

She buckled Lily into Thomas's car.

"Go home."

"Our home."

"Not tonight."

Daniel glanced at Thomas and lowered his voice.

"My mother is going to panic if she knows you copied that."

Rachel straightened slowly.

"Good."

"You don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

Daniel stared at her for several seconds.

"I can't."

Rachel opened the passenger door.

"Then you chose."

She got into the car.

Thomas drove away without another word.

Rachel watched Daniel shrink in the side mirror.

Her phone vibrated before they reached the first traffic light.

A message from Linda.

Rachel expected an apology.

Instead, she saw a photograph.

It showed Linda sitting at the kitchen table with a red mark on her wrist.

Below it was one sentence.

You assaulted me in my own home, and I have witnesses.

Rachel read it twice.

Then a second message arrived.

May you like
