Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE VIDEO

The unknown account belonged to a woman named Vanessa Cole.

I had never met her.

She had watched Brooke’s livestream while feeding her newborn son at two in the morning.

When Diane struck Lily, Vanessa had immediately started recording her screen.

She captured the slap, Lily’s scream, Jason’s response, and my three strikes across his face.

She also captured the moments before the violence.

Those moments mattered more than anyone realized.

Lily had not thrown the bowl.

Diane had marched across the room while shouting because a spoonful of soup had dripped onto the tablecloth.

She ripped Lily from the booster seat so violently that the bowl tipped from the tray.

Then she struck her.

Brooke had already deleted the original livestream.

Vanessa had preserved the truth.

I called her from the garage.

“I don’t know how to thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me.”

“Why did you record it?”

Her voice became quiet.

“My mother used to hit my daughter.”

“I kept telling myself it wasn’t serious enough to destroy the family.”

“Then one day it became serious enough to put her in the hospital.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.”

“Just don’t go back.”

Vanessa sent the complete recording to Eleanor and agreed to provide a sworn statement.

By sunrise, Lily and I were inside my sister Rachel’s apartment in Evanston.

Rachel opened the door wearing pajama pants and an old college sweatshirt.

The moment she saw Lily’s cheek, her face changed.

“Who did this?”

“Diane.”

Rachel pulled us inside.

“And Jason?”

“He watched.”

Rachel’s jaw tightened.

Then she noticed the packed canvas bag.

“You knew something was going to happen.”

“I knew something had to change.”

I had hidden copies of our birth certificates, Lily’s medical records, financial documents, and insurance information inside the bag.

I also carried three thousand dollars in cash.

It was money I had saved twenty dollars at a time without Jason noticing.

Rachel stared at the contents spread across her kitchen table.

“How long have you been planning this?”

“Almost a year.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Jason checked my calls.”

“Emily.”

“He monitored the mileage on my car.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He controlled our joint account.”

She sat beside me.

“You should have told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“You had nothing to be ashamed of.”

I looked toward the couch where Lily slept beneath a knitted blanket.

“I stayed.”

“You survived.”

“I let Diane near her.”

“You were trying to keep peace in a house designed to punish anyone who resisted.”

My phone rang again.

This time the caller ID displayed Chicago Police Department.

Eleanor had warned me not to ignore them.

I answered.

The officer identified himself as Detective Marcus Bell.

He asked me to come in for questioning regarding an alleged assault against Diane and Jason Bennett.

“I will come with my attorney.”

“When?”

“Today.”

He paused.

“Is your daughter with you?”

“Yes.”

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

The word was spoken so quietly I almost missed it.

Then he added something unexpected.

“Mrs. Bennett, before you arrive, you should know that we received more than forty calls regarding a video involving your daughter.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Forty?”

“People saw the livestream.”

“What did they report?”

May you like

He lowered his voice.

“They reported that your mother-in-law struck a toddler.”
