Chapter 3 - THE FIRST COURTROOM

Eleanor’s office occupied the thirty-fourth floor of a glass tower overlooking the Chicago River.

She wore a navy suit, silver earrings, and the expression of a woman who had already decided how the battle would end.

She examined Lily’s cheek without touching it.

Then she studied the video.

When Diane’s hand connected with Lily’s face, Eleanor stopped the recording.

She replayed the three seconds before the strike.

Diane’s fingers were wrapped around Lily’s upper arm.

Lily’s feet were off the floor.

Jason was looking directly at them.

“He cannot claim he didn’t see it,” Eleanor said.

“He’ll claim he froze.”

“Then we will ask how long a father is allowed to remain frozen while his child is attacked.”

At eight-thirty, Eleanor filed an emergency petition for temporary sole custody.

She also requested an order prohibiting Jason and Diane from contacting Lily until the court reviewed the evidence.

By eleven, we stood before Judge Helen Ortiz.

Jason arrived with a lawyer named Franklin Ward.

Diane came in a wheelchair.

Her left hand rested dramatically against her hip.

Brooke pushed her into the courtroom while glaring at me.

Jason avoided looking at Lily.

Ward immediately argued that I had assaulted two family members and abducted my daughter after a domestic disagreement.

Eleanor placed the urgent care report before the judge.

Then she submitted photographs of Lily’s face.

Judge Ortiz’s expression hardened.

Ward shifted his argument.

He claimed Diane had made accidental contact while preventing Lily from falling.

Eleanor connected her laptop to the courtroom screen.

The video began.

The room remained completely silent.

Diane’s shouting filled the speakers.

The bowl spilled.

Her hand rose.

The slap landed.

Lily screamed.

Then Jason said, “Mom just lost her temper.”

Judge Ortiz stopped the video.

She looked at Jason.

“Did you say those words?”

Jason swallowed.

“I was trying to calm the situation.”

“Your daughter had just been struck.”

“I didn’t fully understand what happened.”

“The video shows you watching.”

“My mother is elderly.”

“Your daughter is two.”

Jason lowered his head.

Judge Ortiz granted me temporary sole custody.

Jason was prohibited from removing Lily from my care.

Diane was ordered to have no contact with her.

Jason could request supervised visitation after completing an initial assessment.

The judge also issued a temporary order of protection covering Lily and me.

Diane suddenly stood from her wheelchair.

“This is ridiculous.”

Her injured hip appeared to heal instantly.

Judge Ortiz stared at her.

“Mrs. Bennett, sit down.”

“That woman attacked my son three times.”

“And the court will review every action taken by every person in that room.”

Diane pointed at me.

“She planned this.”

Eleanor answered before I could.

“She planned to protect herself.”

Diane laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

Judge Ortiz leaned forward.

“Mrs. Bennett, neither do you.”

The gavel came down.

For the first time in three years, someone with authority had told Diane Bennett that no meant no.

As we left the courtroom, Detective Bell waited in the hallway.

He was not alone.

A woman from the Department of Children and Family Services stood beside him.

Her name was Angela Ruiz.

She held a thick folder bearing Lily’s name.

“We need to discuss the other bruises,” she said.

Jason stopped walking.

“What other bruises?”

May you like

I looked at him.

“The ones you never wanted to see.”
