Chapter 18 - The Price of Telling the Truth

Nathan testified before a federal grand jury.

Rebecca testified after him.

Vanessa testified three days later.

Margaret waived family privileges and turned over decades of private correspondence.

The Howard name became synonymous with scandal.

But something unexpected happened.

Employees began coming forward.

Former workers revealed abuses they had remained afraid to discuss.

Families of victims contacted the restitution fund.

Auditors recovered millions.

Then tens of millions.

Then more than two hundred million dollars.

Nathan sold several personal assets to expand the fund.

The private jet went first.

Then two vacation properties.

Then his collection of classic cars.

Reporters called it an attempt to repair his image.

Nathan did not respond.

Elena understood why.

He was not buying forgiveness.

He was refusing to profit from silence.

Months passed.

Elena’s pregnancy progressed safely.

Every doctor visit still filled Nathan with anxiety.

Each time the heartbeat appeared on the monitor, his shoulders relaxed.

One afternoon Elena smiled at him.

“You’re going to frighten the ultrasound technician.”

“I’m being calm.”

“You asked her four times whether the heartbeat sounded normal.”

“That was medical curiosity.”

Elena laughed.

It was one of the first easy laughs they had shared since the staircase.

Their marriage was healing too.

Not magically.

Not quickly.

Nathan admitted how deeply Elena’s secret investigation had hurt him.

Elena admitted she had stopped treating marriage as a partnership when fear took over.

They went to counseling.

They argued.

They apologized.

They learned how to tell the truth before it became another weapon someone else could use.

Rebecca remained nearby.

Her relationship with Nathan became something neither expected.

Not romance.

Not regret.

Friendship.

Two survivors of the same missing years.

Vanessa eventually pleaded guilty.

Her cooperation reduced her sentence, but it did not erase it.

Before sentencing she addressed Elena.

“I thought pain gave me permission.”

Vanessa said.

“It didn’t.”

Elena listened without expression.

Vanessa continued.

“You didn’t destroy me.”

“I did.”

The judge imposed the sentence.

Vanessa was taken away.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Elena.

“Do you forgive her?”

One shouted.

Elena stopped.

Nathan looked at her.

Rebecca watched from nearby.

Elena answered carefully.

“I don’t think every story needs forgiveness to have closure.”

She placed a hand against her stomach.

“Sometimes accountability is closure.”

The clip spread across the country.

But Elena cared about only one thing that day.

The baby kicked.

Hard.

Nathan felt it.

His eyes widened.

May you like

Elena smiled.

For the first time, the future felt louder than the past.
