Chapter 3 - Every Camera Was Watching

Silence settled over the foyer.
Vanessa slowly looked upward.
Her eyes found the camera.
Then another.
And another.
Tiny lenses were hidden inside decorative fixtures she had walked beneath every day.
Her face changed completely.
The tears disappeared.
“What is this?”
Detective Ruiz approached the staircase.
“It’s an investigation.”
“Into what?”
“You.”
Vanessa laughed once.
It sounded hollow.
“This is insane.”
Ruiz glanced toward Elena.
“Elena.”
That was the signal.
Elena opened her eyes.
Mrs. Howard gasped.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Elena?”
Elena slowly pushed herself upright.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
“You were awake?”
Elena looked at her.
“For all of it.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
Elena placed one hand protectively against her stomach.
“The baby is okay.”
She looked toward Mrs. Howard.
“I’m okay.”
Mrs. Howard’s shock turned into anger.
“You staged this?”
“The fall wasn’t staged.”
Elena’s gaze returned to Vanessa.
“The surveillance was.”
Ruiz nodded toward the evidence technician.
She opened a laptop.
A video filled the screen.
It showed Vanessa entering the upstairs hallway forty minutes earlier.
She checked both directions.
Then she removed a small bottle from her handbag.
Another camera captured her pouring something into Elena’s water glass.
Mrs. Howard whispered.
“What is that?”
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“It’s not what it looks like.”
Ruiz replied calmly.
“That’s why we collected the glass.”
Vanessa’s breathing became shallow.
The technician switched videos.
This footage showed Vanessa speaking with a man inside the mansion garage two nights earlier.
The audio was clear.
“When Elena is gone, Nathan will need someone.”
Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the foyer.
The man replied.
“And what happens if she refuses to leave?”
Vanessa smiled on the screen.
“Then I’ll make sure everyone believes she was unstable.”
Present-day Vanessa lunged toward the laptop.
An officer immediately blocked her.
“That recording is illegal.”
Ruiz shook his head.
“Not in the way it was obtained.”
Vanessa turned toward Elena.
“You set me up.”
Elena stood carefully.
“No.”
“I gave you opportunities to stop.”
“You chose not to.”
Vanessa’s eyes burned.
“You have no idea what she’s done.”
She pointed at Elena.
“She’s lying to all of you.”
Elena remained calm.
“Then tell them.”
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Ruiz placed photographs on the foyer table.
Each showed documents, messages, bank transfers, and surveillance stills.
“For twelve weeks, Ms. Howard cooperated with an investigation involving identity fraud, blackmail, unlawful surveillance, attempted poisoning, and conspiracy.”
Mrs. Howard grabbed the back of a chair.
“Poisoning?”
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“No.”
Ruiz looked directly at her.
“The substance in Elena’s glass was not immediately lethal.”
Vanessa almost sighed in relief.
Then Ruiz continued.
“But repeated exposure during pregnancy could have caused severe complications.”
Nathan’s voice suddenly came from behind them.
“What did you just say?”
Everyone turned.
Nathan Howard stood inside the doorway.
He was still wearing his dark business suit.
His expression was unreadable.
Vanessa whispered his name.
“Nathan.”
She took one step toward him.
He did not move.
Ruiz studied him carefully.
Nathan looked at Elena.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the evidence spread across the table.
“What exactly has been happening inside my house?”
Elena met her husband’s eyes.
May you like
And for the first time that night, she was afraid.
Because Nathan was not supposed to be home yet.
