Chapter 13 - The Vault

The bank vault had not been opened in twenty-one years.

Ethan entered with Margaret Sloan and two federal investigators.

Rosa stayed at the estate with Lily.

Inside the box were six folders.

A cassette recording.

Three sets of financial ledgers.

And photographs.

Richard appeared in several.

Charles Haynes appeared in others.

The oldest records showed millions being diverted from Caldwell charitable foundations.

Money intended for hospitals.

Schools.

Research programs.

Ethan stared at the numbers.

His mother had discovered everything.

Margaret Sloan examined the final folder.

“This could put Richard in prison.”

Ethan looked at Charles Haynes’s name.

“And Charles.”

One investigator inserted the cassette into an old player supplied by the bank.

Elizabeth’s voice filled the room.

Ethan stopped breathing.

He had almost forgotten its sound.

“If this recording is being heard, I was unable to resolve matters privately.”

Her voice was calm.

“I discovered Richard and Charles moving charitable funds through companies they secretly control.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Elizabeth continued.

“Thomas wants silence.”

“He believes Richard will stop.”

“I do not.”

Then the recording became more personal.

“I am particularly afraid because Richard has begun asking about Ethan’s future inheritance.”

Ethan opened his eyes.

“He believes controlling the company means controlling my son.”

A pause followed.

“I will not allow that.”

The cassette clicked.

Then Elizabeth said her final words.

“If anything happens to me, do not assume guilt.”

“But do not assume innocence merely because someone carries our name.”

The recording ended.

Ethan stood motionless.

There was no confession of murder.

No proof Richard caused the accident.

But there was more than enough evidence of financial crimes.

Margaret touched Ethan’s arm.

“Your mother protected you.”

Ethan looked toward the vault.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“She tried to protect everybody.”

By the time Ethan returned home, investigators had warrants.

Charles Haynes was being questioned.

Richard’s accounts were frozen.

Victoria’s phone records had been subpoenaed.

For the first time, Ethan believed the nightmare might be ending.

Then he smelled smoke.

He stepped from the car.

An alarm screamed inside the mansion.

Flames glowed behind an upstairs window.

“Lily.”

Ethan ran.

Security guards tried to stop him.

He pushed past them.

Rosa appeared near the front staircase coughing.

“Ethan!”

“Where is she?”

“I thought she was with you!”

His blood turned cold.

Smoke poured across the second floor.

Then a tiny scream came from the east corridor.

“Daddy!”

Ethan ran directly into the smoke.

He found Lily crouched beside the piano room door.

Button was in her arms.

He lifted her.

“Close your eyes.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know.”

“Don’t leave me.”

“Never.”

He carried her toward the stairs.

A ceiling fixture crashed behind them.

They reached the entrance seconds before firefighters arrived.

Outside, Rosa grabbed Lily.

Ethan coughed violently.

Then Daniel approached.

His face was grim.

“The fire started in the archive room.”

Ethan looked back at the mansion.

“What was stored there?”

May you like

Daniel answered quietly.

“Victoria’s investigation files.”
