Chapter 5 - Victoria Already Knew

Rosa woke at dawn to find Ethan sitting outside Lily’s hospital room.
He had not changed clothes.
His tie was gone.
His shirt sleeves were rolled up.
He looked less like Ethan Caldwell and more like a man who had discovered that every wall around him contained hidden doors.
Rosa stepped into the hallway.
“What happened?”
Ethan stood.
“We recovered the video.”
Relief crossed her face.
“Good.”
“Jonathan deleted it.”
Rosa frowned.
“Your assistant?”
“Victoria paid him.”
Rosa’s expression hardened.
Then Ethan showed her the photograph.
It had been printed from Jonathan’s statement.
Lily stood in the estate garden six months earlier.
Rosa was visible behind her.
On the back, someone had written three words.
Possible Caldwell issue.
Rosa stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
“I think Victoria suspected Lily was mine.”
Rosa’s face lost color.
“That’s impossible.”
“She had people investigating you.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Rosa looked through the window at her sleeping daughter.
“She knew?”
“Maybe.”
“She knew there was even a possibility.”
“Yes.”
Rosa’s anger rose slowly.
“And she still treated Lily like that.”
Ethan said nothing.
There was nothing useful to say.
A nurse approached.
“The paternity laboratory called.”
Rosa and Ethan both turned.
“They can process the expedited test today.”
Ethan nodded.
“Do it.”
Hours later, Lily was discharged with instructions for rest.
Ethan drove Rosa and Lily back to the estate himself.
Victoria was gone.
Her clothes had been packed.
Her family’s attorney had already called twice.
Her mother had called eleven times.
Her father had left one message.
You are making a catastrophic mistake.
Ethan deleted it.
At noon, a courier delivered an envelope.
Inside was a formal notice demanding reimbursement for canceled wedding expenses.
Rosa stared at the number.
“Four point eight million dollars?”
Ethan barely looked at it.
“They can demand whatever they want.”
Another page fell from the envelope.
Rosa picked it up.
Her expression changed.
It was not part of the legal notice.
It was a photocopy of an employment file.
Her employment file.
Across the top someone had written:
THE MOTHER LIED FOR THREE YEARS.
Rosa’s fingers trembled.
Ethan looked toward the windows.
Someone wanted her frightened.
Someone wanted him suspicious.
Then his phone rang.
The paternity laboratory.
Ethan answered on speaker.
The doctor confirmed his identity.
Then she spoke calmly.
“The probability of paternity is greater than 99.99 percent.”
Lily was Ethan Caldwell’s biological daughter.
Rosa closed her eyes.
Ethan looked toward the child sleeping on the sofa with Button beside her.
His daughter.
Scientifically.
Legally.
Irrefutably.
Then Daniel entered the room quickly.
“Sir, you need to see the television.”
Ethan turned.
Every major financial network was carrying the same headline.
BILLIONAIRE CALDWELL HID SECRET CHILD WITH HOUSEKEEPER.
Rosa stared at the screen.
Photographs of her appeared.
Photographs of Lily appeared.
And beneath them was a quote attributed to an anonymous source.
Rosa Martinez has been planning this for years.
Ethan’s face hardened.
May you like
Victoria had not simply prepared for a breakup.
She had prepared for war.
