Chapter 18 - The Names Above the Names

Nathaniel vanished.
The government denied releasing him.
Federal marshals insisted he had been transferred using forged documents.
Someone had entered a secure facility using authentic credentials.
Someone had authorized the move from inside.
Marcus called it institutional corruption.
I called it proof.
Claire's files contained hundreds of names.
But Daniel discovered a separate category encrypted beneath the others.
No full names.
Only titles.
THE JUDGE.
THE MINISTER.
THE DIRECTOR.
THE SENATOR.
THE CHAIRMAN.
People Victoria considered too dangerous to identify directly.
Nathaniel knew who they were.
That was why they rescued him.
Two weeks later, I testified before a federal grand jury.
Cameras surrounded the courthouse.
Reporters screamed questions.
One asked whether I regretted destroying the royal portrait.
I almost laughed.
A child had been trapped behind it.
The painting could burn for all I cared.
Inside the courthouse, a deputy led me toward a private waiting room.
Marcus was supposed to meet me there.
He never arrived.
Instead, I found an envelope on the chair.
ELENA HART.
Inside was a photograph.
Marcus was tied to a chair.
A newspaper dated that morning rested against his chest.
On the back, Nathaniel had written an address.
And a message.
BRING CLAIRE'S ORIGINAL DRIVE.
NO POLICE.
I immediately called the police.
Nathaniel already knew I would.
That was the point.
The address belonged to an abandoned television studio in Manhattan.
By evening, it was surrounded by federal tactical teams.
I entered wearing a wire.
Daniel waited in a command vehicle.
The studio was dark.
A single spotlight illuminated Marcus.
He was alive.
Nathaniel stood beside him.
No weapon visible.
“You made this too public,” I said.
“That was intentional.”
He looked toward the cameras mounted around the studio.
“This building is broadcasting.”
My pulse quickened.
“To where?”
“Everywhere.”
Screens behind him turned on.
Live feeds appeared from dozens of devices.
News stations.
Social platforms.
Streaming services.
Nathaniel smiled.
“My sister believed secrets created power.”
“I learned something better.”
“What?”
“Truth creates chaos.”
Then he held up a folder.
“Tonight, Elena, we're going to expose everyone.”
Marcus shouted.
“Don't believe him.”
May you like
Nathaniel's smile vanished.
“Because one of those names belongs to someone standing right beside you.”
