Chapter 6 - The Man Who Vanished

Marcus found Daniel before dawn.

He was hiding in a motel in Queens under a false name.

When police entered the room, he did not run.

He simply asked one question.

“Is Lucy alive?”

Marcus brought him to an interrogation room.

I watched through the glass.

Daniel looked twenty years older than I remembered.

His beard was untrimmed.

His eyes were hollow.

He admitted working inside Sebastian's operation.

Then he said something none of us expected.

“Claire sent me in.”

I entered the room despite Marcus telling me not to.

“You let me believe you abandoned her.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to stay alive.”

“You worked for the people who killed my sister.”

His face twisted.

“I worked for Claire.”

He told us everything.

Eleven months before her death, Claire discovered that millions of dollars donated to the Vale Foundation were being transferred through shell charities.

The charities claimed to operate shelters overseas.

Most did not exist.

Then Claire found expenses connected to private medical facilities, transportation companies, and sealed adoption networks.

Children classified as missing were appearing under new identities.

Some went to wealthy families who could not legally adopt.

Others were used to pressure politicians, donors, or executives involved in illegal arrangements.

It was not trafficking for money alone.

It was leverage.

Secrets.

Blackmail.

Control.

Claire believed the Vale family operated a network that turned vulnerable children into currency.

“She needed proof,” Daniel said.

“So I volunteered.”

I could barely breathe.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“She wanted you outside it.”

Daniel looked at the table.

“She knew you would come after her.”

He had infiltrated the mansion's security systems using a contractor identity.

He found Lucy months after Claire died.

He kept Lucy alive by altering internal transfer records.

But he could not remove her without exposing himself.

“Why put her behind that portrait?”

“I didn't.”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Someone moved her there yesterday.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Who?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Why yesterday?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because someone wanted Elena to find her.”

Silence filled the room.

My anger disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

The axe.

The whisper.

The gala.

My discovery had felt accidental.

It had not been.

Somebody had guided me into that corridor.

Someone knew I would hear Lucy.

Someone knew where the axe from the ceremonial fire display was stored.

Someone had arranged for the hidden panel to be breakable.

I had not uncovered the conspiracy.

I had been invited into it.

Marcus asked the obvious question.

“Why?”

May you like

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“Because someone inside the Vale family wants Sebastian destroyed.”
