Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

Evelyn Whitmore sat perfectly straight in the cold, uncomfortable metal chair screwed to the floor of the stark police interrogation room.

She politely but firmly refused the styrofoam cup of cheap, bitter coffee offered by the weary and unimpressed lead detective.

Her custom-tailored pearl-gray designer suit, though slightly wrinkled from the rough ride in the cruiser, looked entirely out of place amidst the peeling paint and dreary gray walls of the downtown precinct.

She confidently, almost arrogantly, informed the police that the entire distressing incident was simply a terrible, unfortunate misunderstanding blown entirely out of proportion.

She claimed, with a chillingly convincing tone of grandmotherly concern, that Maya had suffered a violent psychotic break and attacked her completely without provocation.

Evelyn boldly accused her daughter-in-law of purchasing the hidden security camera, planting it in the closet, and using sophisticated computer software to fabricate the damning footage.

She insisted that Maya was a dangerous, unstable woman who was desperately trying to sever the sacred bond between a loving grandmother and her only grandson.

Detective Miller did not argue, raise his voice, or attempt to interrupt her meticulously rehearsed and flawlessly delivered monologue of lies.

He simply sighed heavily, reached across the scratched metal table, opened his heavy black laptop, and turned the high-resolution screen to face her directly.

Without saying a single word, he pressed the play button on the unedited, raw video file extracted directly from the hidden nursery camera.

Evelyn watched in absolute, horrified silence as the digital version of herself casually slipped the life-saving inhaler into her expensive leather handbag while Oliver gasped for air in the background.

She watched herself deliberately knock the heavy ceramic lamp onto the floor, shatter the glass, and scatter the prescription bottles across the changing table to stage a violent struggle.

Her confident, aristocratic smile slowly melted away, replaced by a tight, ugly grimace of raw panic and undeniable realization.

The undeniable visual proof of her calculated cruelty reflected brightly in her wide, trembling eyes as the horrific video continued to play to its end.

She swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry, and immediately demanded in a shrill, shaking voice to speak with her private defense attorney.

Detective Miller calmly closed the laptop, letting the heavy lid snap shut with a resounding thud that sounded exactly like a judge's final gavel.

He leaned forward and informed her that her esteemed lawyer was already waiting in the lobby, though he sincerely doubted any legal defense could erase what he had just seen.
