Chapter 9 - The Judgment

The nervous tension in the courthouse hallway the next morning was so incredibly thick it felt like trying to breathe underwater.

The jury had been sent to the deliberation room just after breakfast, and the agonizing waiting game had officially begun.

Ryan and Maya sat closely together on a hard wooden bench near the tall windows, nervously drinking terrible coffee from small styrofoam cups.

They barely spoke a word to each other, their minds completely consumed by the terrifying possibility that the jury might somehow let her go.

Less than three hours later, a stern court clerk stepped out of the heavy double doors and announced that a final verdict had been reached.

Ryan’s heart slammed aggressively against his ribcage as he held his wife’s hand and walked back into the solemn, silent courtroom.

Evelyn was brought back in from the holding cell, looking incredibly haggard, exhausted, and heavily medicated after her violent outburst the previous day.

She stared blankly at the polished wooden table in front of her, the fire in her eyes completely extinguished by the reality of her impending doom.

The twelve jurors filed back into the jury box in a single line, their faces completely unreadable and strictly professional.

The judge asked the foreperson, a retired school teacher with kind eyes, to please stand and read the jury's final, unanimous decisions.

The foreperson unfolded the heavy legal document, her voice steady and clear as it carried across the completely silent room.

On the serious charge of felony child endangerment, the jury found the defendant completely and undeniably guilty.

On the violent charge of aggravated assault and battery against Maya Whitmore, the jury found the defendant guilty.

On the complex federal charges of illegal wiretapping and attempted criminal extortion, the jury once again found the defendant guilty.

A massive, collective sigh of profound relief instantly washed over the entire prosecution table and the crowded public gallery.

Maya buried her tear-stained face against Ryan’s shoulder, silently sobbing as the enormous weight of the terrifying ordeal finally lifted from her spirit.

Evelyn simply closed her eyes, a single, pathetic tear rolling down her wrinkled cheek as the heavy steel handcuffs were placed back on her wrists.

She was not crying out of deep remorse for the terrible things she had done to her family.

May you like

She was only crying because she had finally been caught, completely defeated, and publicly stripped of all her immense power.

The judge harshly banged his gavel one final time, officially revoking her bail and sending her back to the dark county jail to await formal sentencing.
