Chapter 9 - Pickup List

Rachel did not answer Mark's late-night message.

The next morning, she took Lily to preschool and gave the director a copy of the temporary parenting order.

The director, Ms. Alvarez, read it carefully.

"Only you and Mark can pick her up?"

"Yes, unless we both approve someone else in writing."

Ms. Alvarez made a note in the system.

"I'll alert the front desk."

Rachel almost relaxed.

At 2:40 p.m., her phone rang from the preschool number.

Ms. Alvarez sounded tense.

"Rachel, Diane Carter is here."

Rachel stood up so quickly from Jenna's dining table that her chair fell backward.

"Do not release Lily."

"We won't."

"I'm coming."

Jenna drove while Rachel called Maya.

By the time they reached the school, Diane was standing in the lobby arguing with the receptionist.

She wore sunglasses on top of her gray hair and held a folded sheet of paper.

"This is absurd," Diane was saying.

"I'm her grandmother."

Rachel entered.

Diane turned.

"There you are."

"Why are you here?"

"Mark asked me to pick up Lily."

Rachel's heart pounded.

"Mark knows the order."

Diane held up the paper.

"He signed authorization."

Ms. Alvarez stepped out of her office.

"The authorization is dated last month. It does not override the current order."

Diane's eyes sharpened.

"You are keeping a child from family because of paperwork?"

Rachel stared at the old pickup form.

"Give me a copy."

Diane pulled it back.

"It's not yours."

Ms. Alvarez calmly said the school already had a scanned copy in Lily's file.

Diane's face changed again.

Rachel saw it.

A tiny flash of calculation.

Then Diane smiled.

"Fine."

She turned toward the door.

"This family has become unbelievable."

Rachel waited until Diane left the parking lot before taking Lily home.

In the car, Lily seemed cheerful and unaware of the argument.

Then she asked a question from the back seat.

"Why didn't Grandma take me to the pink house?"

Rachel looked at her through the rearview mirror.

"Who told you she was coming?"

"Grandma."

"When?"

"On Daddy's phone."

Rachel's fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

"Today?"

Lily nodded.

"Daddy said Grandma has a surprise."

Rachel called Mark as soon as they reached Jenna's driveway.

Maya had advised communication through writing, but Rachel needed to hear his answer.

"Did you send your mother to Lily's preschool?"

Mark sounded genuinely confused.

"What?"

"She showed up with an old pickup authorization and said you sent her."

Silence.

Then Mark swore under his breath.

"I didn't."

"Lily says you told her Grandma had a surprise."

"I said Grandma bought her a surprise. I didn't say she was picking her up."

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Then your mother lied to the school."

Mark did not defend Diane this time.

That frightened Rachel more than his usual excuses.

"Send me a picture of the form," he said.

"Why?"

"Because I need to see the date."

Rachel asked the school to email both parents a copy.

Ten minutes later, Mark called again.

"I didn't sign that."

Rachel stared at the screen.

"It's your signature."

"It looks like my signature."

"Mark."

"Rachel, listen to me. I filled out a pickup form last year when Mom watched Lily for two weeks while you had that project deadline."

"This one is dated last month."

"I know."

Rachel leaned against Jenna's car.

"Are you saying she forged it?"

Mark was silent.

"Mark?"

"I'm saying I didn't sign it last month."

For the first time, Rachel heard fear in his voice.

Not fear of losing an argument.

Fear of his own mother.

That evening, Mark sent Rachel a photograph.

It showed a stack of documents on Diane's dining table.

He had apparently gone to her house after work.

On top was a printed page with Lily's name.

The header read TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP CHECKLIST.

Rachel zoomed in until the words blurred.

The checklist did not mention Rachel alone.

It listed both parents.

Mother: emotional instability.

Father: work travel, poor judgment, dependency on family assistance.

Rachel called Mark.

He answered on the first ring.

"Where did you find this?"

His voice sounded hollow.

"In my mother's desk."

Rachel stared at the photograph.

"She was documenting you too."

"Yeah."

"Why?"

Mark took a long breath.

"I think she was never helping me get Lily."

Rachel understood before he said the rest.

"She was trying to get Lily from both of us."

Mark asked Rachel not to tell Diane that he had found the guardianship checklist.

Rachel almost refused simply because secrecy had caused so much damage already.

Then Maya explained the difference between hiding truth from a spouse and preserving evidence from someone who might destroy it.

Rachel agreed reluctantly.

For the first time, she and Mark had the same immediate question.

They were no longer asking which parent Diane wanted Lily to live with.

They were asking why Diane had created a plan in which both parents could be removed.
