Chapter 14 - The Dead EndI pushed deeper into the labyrinth of the copper mine. The air grew colder, thinner, heavy with the oppressive weight of thousands of tons of rock above me.

Taylor was tracking me relentlessly, her flashlight beam occasionally slicing through the darkness behind me. She was desperate. She knew that returning to Evelyn without the USB drive was a death sentence. The Vance matriarch didn't tolerate failure.

I took a sharp right turn down a narrow auxiliary shaft, hoping to double back and flank her.

My foot splashed into a puddle of stagnant water, the sound echoing loudly.

"I hear you, Mark," Taylor called out, her voice closer now. She fired a blind shot down the tunnel. The bullet ricocheted off the stone with a terrifying zing, showering me in rock dust.

I ducked low, crawling behind a rusted, overturned ore cart.

"This doesn't end well for either of us if you don't give me that drive!" Taylor yelled. "Mother's men have this entire mountain surrounded by now. David is probably already dead."

No. David is a survivor, I told myself, clutching the dummy USB drive in my pocket. I needed a way to disarm her without getting shot.

I scanned the tunnel. My red flashlight illuminated a terrifying sight. Ten feet away, the tunnel abruptly ended in a massive wall of collapsed rock. It was a dead end.

I was trapped.

Taylor stepped around the corner, her bright white flashlight immediately blinding me. I raised my hand to shield my eyes.

"End of the line, Mark," Taylor breathed, panting heavily. She raised the heavy pistol, pointing it directly at my chest. Her hands were shaking violently.

"You're not a killer, Taylor," I said softly, standing up slowly. I kept my hands visible. "You let Evelyn do your dirty work. You can't pull that trigger."

"Watch me," she spat, her finger tightening on the trigger.

"If you shoot me, you'll never find the real drive," I said, my voice eerily calm.

Taylor paused. "What?"

I held up the silver USB drive I had been waving around outside. "This is a decoy. A mixtape I bought at the truck stop. The real drive with all of Evelyn's financial crimes, the trust documents, and the proof of Arthur's surgeries? David uploaded it to a dead man's switch. If we don't enter a password every twelve hours, it automatically emails the entire cache to the FBI, the IRS, and the New York Times."

Taylor’s face drained of color. The pistol wavered in her grip. "You're lying."

"Shoot me and find out," I challenged, taking a slow step toward her. "You kill me, the switch activates. Evelyn's empire crumbles. And who do you think she's going to blame?"

For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw genuine, unadulterated terror in Taylor's eyes. She realized she was trapped in a lose-lose scenario. Her mother was a monster, and I was the only leverage she had left.

Slowly, agonizingly, Taylor lowered the gun.

"What do we do?" she whispered, a tear finally cutting a clean line through the dirt on her cheek.

Before I could answer, a slow, mocking applause echoed down the tunnel.

"Bravo. A brilliant performance, Mark."

From the darkness behind Taylor stepped a figure. His arm was heavily bandaged, secured in a black sling, and his face was pale and drawn in the harsh flashlight beam.

But it was my face.

Arthur Vance.

In his good hand, he held a massive, tactical shotgun.

"Hello, wife," Arthur sneered at Taylor. "Mother sent me in to clean up your mess. Again."
