Chapter 1: The Fall of a Perfect Empire

Chapter 1: The Fall of a Perfect Empire

The shrill echo of police sirens shattered the silence inside the mansion.

Matthew Ashford staggered backward as dozens of armed federal agents stormed through the front entrance.

"FBI! Nobody move!"

His fiancée, Chloe, grabbed his arm.

"Matthew... tell me this isn't real."

The woman who had been kneeling slowly stood to her feet. She brushed the dust from her blouse, her face calm and unreadable.

For months, everyone had believed she was nothing more than Matthew's timid personal assistant.

They were wrong.

Her name was Emma Carter.

Special Agent Emma Carter.

Matthew stared at her in disbelief.

"You... you're FBI?"

Emma held up her badge.

"Undercover Division."

One of the agents approached her.

"Agent Carter, we've secured the property."

She nodded.

"Any resistance?"

"None."

Matthew finally found his voice.

"This is insane! I haven't done anything!"

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

"Really?"

She pressed a button on her phone.

The living room speakers suddenly came alive.

Matthew's own voice filled the room.

"...Transfer the money through the Cayman accounts."

"...Destroy the accounting files."

"...If anyone talks, make sure they disappear."

The recording continued for nearly ten minutes.

Every illegal payment.

Every bribe.

Every threat.

Every confession.

Matthew's face turned ghostly white.

Chloe slowly stepped away from him.

"You told me you built everything legally."

He reached toward her.

"Chloe... listen..."

She slapped his hand away.

"You lied to everyone."

Emma folded her arms.

"The wiretap has been active for eight months."

Matthew looked at her with hatred.

"So this whole relationship..."

"Was an investigation."

"And none of it was real?"

Emma answered without emotion.

"I never fell in love with a criminal."

Federal agents began carrying boxes of financial records from hidden rooms inside the mansion.

Another team uncovered millions of dollars in cash concealed behind a false wine cellar wall.

Outside, television news helicopters circled overhead.

The empire that Matthew had spent twenty years building was collapsing in a single afternoon.

As agents placed handcuffs on his wrists, Matthew whispered,

"You think you've won?"

Emma met his gaze.

May you like

"No."

"I think justice finally has."
