Chapter 2: The Trial That Changed Everything

Chapter 2: The Trial That Changed Everything
Six months later.
The courtroom was packed with journalists from around the country.
The Ashford corruption trial had become national news.
Former executives lined up to testify against Matthew.
One after another, they described years of fraud, bribery, blackmail, and intimidation.
Emma sat quietly behind the prosecution team.
She wasn't there for recognition.
She was there to make sure the truth survived.
Then came the biggest surprise.
Chloe entered the courtroom.
Matthew looked relieved.
"I knew you'd come."
She walked past him without stopping.
Instead, she took the witness stand.
Matthew's smile disappeared.
"No..."
The prosecutor asked,
"Miss Bennett, why are you here today?"
She took a deep breath.
"Because I finally learned who Matthew really is."
For hours, Chloe described hidden meetings, offshore accounts, fake charities, and secret conversations she had once believed were harmless.
Every answer tightened the case.
Matthew's attorney could barely keep up.
When cross-examination ended, the jury looked visibly shaken.
After three weeks of testimony, the judge returned.
The courtroom stood.
"Matthew Ashford..."
The judge paused.
"...this court finds you guilty on all counts."
Gasps filled the room.
"For conspiracy, money laundering, wire fraud, tax evasion, obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation..."
"You are sentenced to forty-two years in federal prison."
Matthew's knees nearly gave way.
He turned toward Emma one last time.
"You destroyed my life."
Emma replied quietly,
"No."
"You destroyed it the day you believed money made you untouchable."
Security officers escorted him from the courtroom.
For the first time in decades, Matthew Ashford had nothing left to buy.
Not freedom.
May you like
Not loyalty.
Not another chance.
