Chapter 1: The Man Who Bid One Million Dollars

Chapter 1: The Man Who Bid One Million Dollars

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The tall stranger walked forward with calm confidence, his polished shoes barely making a sound against the marble floor.

Julian Whitmore swallowed hard.

For the first time all evening, the man who loved being the center of attention looked completely out of control.

“Who are you?” Julian demanded.

The stranger stopped a few feet from the stage.

“My name is Alexander Hayes.”

The name rippled through the crowd like a shockwave.

Gasps echoed from every corner of the ballroom.

Everyone knew Alexander Hayes.

Billionaire investor.

Philanthropist.

Founder of one of the largest global investment firms.

A man whose wealth dwarfed nearly everyone in the room.

Julian forced a laugh.

“Alexander, surely you're joking.”

“I never joke about people,” Alexander replied.

His eyes shifted toward me.

Unlike everyone else in the room, he wasn't looking at me with amusement.

He was looking at me with respect.

A feeling I had almost forgotten.

“You offered your wife for ten dollars,” Alexander said evenly.

“I simply made a better offer.”

The room fell silent again.

Julian's face turned red.

“This is between my wife and me.”

“No,” Alexander answered.

“You made it everyone's business the moment you decided to humiliate her publicly.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Others suddenly seemed very interested in their champagne glasses.

For the first time, they were realizing what they had laughed at.

Not a joke.

A woman.

A human being.

A wife.

I stood motionless, my heart pounding.

Then Alexander extended a hand toward me.

Not possessively.

Not dramatically.

Simply offering support.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said.

“You deserve better than this.”

And for the first time in years, tears filled my eyes.

May you like

Not from humiliation.

From being seen.
