Chapter 14 - The Cost of Silence

Richard Vale was arrested that afternoon.
Federal investigators reopened the Blackwood clinical trial.
Victor publicly surrendered Claire’s files.
He also voluntarily turned over decades of company archives.
His attorneys warned him.
Blackwood Holdings might collapse.
Investors would flee.
Lawsuits could cost billions.
Victor gave the same answer each time.
“Release everything.”
News helicopters circled the mansion.
Reporters crowded the gates.
Oliver remained indoors.
Lily rarely left his side.
Serena and Mercer were held without immediate release after investigators presented the new evidence.
But the most painful discovery came three days later.
Richard requested to speak with Victor.
Victor agreed.
They met inside a federal interview room.
Richard looked twenty years older.
Victor sat across from him.
“Why Elena?”
Richard stared at the table.
“The trial was failing.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“We needed participants who showed measurable neurological improvement.”
“She was pregnant.”
“I didn’t know at first.”
“You changed her records.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Mercer asked me to.”
Victor stared.
“Mercer enrolled his own daughter?”
“He believed the medication would help her.”
Victor felt disgusted.
“So everyone lied.”
Richard nodded.
“And when Elena died?”
“Mercer blamed us.”
“Serena blamed Claire.”
Richard looked at him.
“Serena blamed everyone.”
Victor leaned forward.
“Did Claire’s condition come from the same drug?”
Richard hesitated.
Victor knew.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“Did Serena poison her?”
Richard’s voice dropped.
“She exposed Claire to an aerosolized version of the compound.”
Victor struggled to remain seated.
“Did you help cover it up?”
“Yes.”
The answer shattered whatever remained between them.
Victor stood.
Richard whispered.
“I loved you like a son.”
Victor turned.
“You loved the company more.”
Richard said nothing.
Victor walked toward the door.
Then Richard spoke again.
“Claire knew you were different.”
Victor stopped.
“She told me you would burn the company down before you let it hurt Oliver.”
Victor looked back.
Richard smiled sadly.
“She was right.”
Victor left without answering.
Outside, Lily waited with Oliver.
She had insisted on coming.
Victor took his son.
Oliver placed one tiny hand against his father’s cheek.
Victor closed his eyes.
For seventeen months, he had believed protecting Oliver meant preserving stability.
The mansion.
The company.
The Blackwood name.
Now he understood.
Protection sometimes meant destroying the very system that had given you power.
Victor looked at Lily.
“We’re selling the pharmaceutical division.”
She stared at him.
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
“What will happen to the money?”
“Victim compensation.”
Lily smiled faintly.
Victor had not seen her smile in days.
Then she asked.
“And Blackwood Holdings?”
Victor looked at Oliver.
May you like
“We rebuild.”
But rebuilding the company would be easier than rebuilding what Serena had nearly destroyed inside their home.
