Chapter 18 - Blackwood Falls

The scandal destroyed Blackwood Pharmaceuticals.
The company’s stock collapsed.
Executives resigned.
Federal indictments followed.
Richard pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and evidence tampering.
Mercer faced additional charges related to unauthorized treatment of Oliver.
Serena accepted a lengthy sentence in exchange for cooperation.
Victor lost billions.
Newspapers called it the fall of a dynasty.
Victor did not care.
He created the Claire Blackwood Medical Accountability Fund with proceeds from the sale of his pharmaceutical assets.
Former trial patients received compensation.
Independent researchers gained access to the complete records.
Families who had been ignored for years were finally heard.
Victor stepped down from several corporate boards.
He sold the mansion.
The new house was not small by normal standards.
But compared with the Blackwood estate, it felt almost ordinary.
There were no service tunnels.
No ballroom.
No private wing.
Oliver loved the backyard.
Lily stayed.
Not because Victor offered more money.
He did.
She refused it.
“I already told you.”
She smiled.
“I’m staying because Oliver needs consistency.”
Victor pretended not to notice that she had also started leaving a coffee mug beside his every morning.
Or that she knew when he skipped dinner.
Or that the house felt different when she laughed.
Six months after the confrontation, Oliver took his first confident steps across the living room.
Victor sat on the floor several feet away.
Lily knelt nearby.
“Come on, buddy.”
Oliver took one step.
Then another.
Victor held out his hands.
Oliver looked at him.
Then at Lily.
Then he made a decision.
He walked between them.
He grabbed one of Victor’s fingers.
Then one of Lily’s.
Victor looked at her.
She smiled through tears.
Oliver laughed.
For once, nobody in the room was thinking about inheritance.
Or evidence.
Or scandal.
There was only a child standing between two people he trusted.
Later that evening, Victor found Lily on the porch.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“Normal.”
She smiled.
“This still isn’t normal.”
Victor looked toward the large house.
“Fair.”
Lily laughed.
He became serious.
“Thank you.”
“You don’t have to keep saying that.”
“I do.”
“No.”
She turned toward him.
“You need to stop treating me like I’m here because you owe me something.”
Victor looked at her.
“Then why are you here?”
Lily hesitated.
Her eyes softened.
“You really don’t know?”
Victor understood.
But before he could answer, Oliver shouted from inside.
“Dada!”
They both laughed.
Victor opened the door.
Lily followed.
Neither needed to finish the conversation.

Not yet.
After everything built on lies, rushing the truth would have felt wrong.
