Chapter 1: The Empty Chair

Chapter 1: The Empty Chair

Three months after the trial, silence became the hardest thing for Alexander Reed to understand.

The grand Reed estate had been sold. Every hallway reminded him of the nights his son had cried alone while he buried himself in board meetings across the world.

Now they lived in a modest lakeside house where no room was too large for a father's voice to reach.

But healing wasn't as simple as changing addresses.

Every morning, Alexander prepared breakfast himself.

Pancakes.

Fresh fruit.

Warm chocolate milk.

Yet Ethan never ate immediately.

Instead, the seven-year-old carefully asked the same question every single day.

"Is... is this really for me?"

Alexander's heart cracked every time.

"It always will be."

One afternoon, Alexander accidentally found dozens of slices of bread hidden beneath Ethan's bed.

Some were moldy.

Some were wrapped carefully in napkins.

Others had little notes written in childish handwriting.

"For tomorrow."

"In case Daddy forgets."

Alexander sat on the floor holding the stale bread, unable to breathe.

His son still believed food could disappear overnight.

That evening, Alexander called Dr. Amelia Brooks, one of the country's leading child trauma specialists.

After spending an hour with Ethan, she quietly spoke to Alexander outside.

"He isn't afraid of hunger anymore," she said.

"He's afraid of hope."

"When children survive prolonged neglect, they prepare for love to disappear just as suddenly as food."

Alexander realized saving Ethan from Clara had only been the first step.

Now he had to teach his son something even harder.

That love could stay.
