Chapter 1: The Folder Opens

Chapter 1: The Folder Opens

No one moved.

The chairman's question hung over the ballroom like thunder waiting to break.

"Melissa... do you still want Vanessa attached?"

Every camera slowly turned toward me.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous," she said, folding her arms. "She's the writer."

The chairman didn't smile.

"No," he replied calmly.

"She's the creator."

Silence.

The director blinked.

"What... what do you mean?"

I gently placed the black folder on the marble table.

One by one, I removed the documents.

"The original screenplay registration."

"The intellectual property ownership agreement."

"The financing structure."

"The creative approval clause."

Each page landed with a quiet sound that somehow echoed through the entire ballroom.

"I never sold the story."

I looked at the executives.

"I licensed it."

The chairman nodded.

"The entire franchise exists because Melissa allowed this studio to produce it."

A producer whispered,

"That's impossible..."

"It isn't," another executive answered.

"Every sequel, every streaming series, every international release requires her written approval."

Vanessa's confident smile disappeared.

The director suddenly looked pale.

"You never told us."

The chairman answered without emotion.

"Because her contract required complete anonymity until tonight."

I slowly lifted the final page.

"The conduct clause."

Vanessa stared at her own signature.

Her breathing became uneven.

Clause 14.

Any verified public abuse, harassment, or behavior causing reputational damage could result in immediate termination without compensation.

She had signed it herself.

Less than three months earlier.

The ballroom became so quiet that the sound of someone's champagne glass trembling could be heard across the room.

Vanessa whispered,

"...No."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"You poured wine on my work."

"You struck the creator of the film you were celebrating."

"And you did it while dozens of cameras were recording."

Her assistant slowly lowered her phone.

"So was everyone else."

Around the room...

People began checking their screens.

Every angle.

Every second.

Nothing had been missed.

May you like

For the first time all evening...

Vanessa looked afraid.
