Chapter 1: The Glass That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Glass That Changed Everything

The crash echoed through the ballroom.

A champagne glass exploded against the marble floor only inches from Emily's feet.

Conversations stopped.

Music faded into silence.

More than two hundred guests turned toward the pregnant maid standing frozen beside the shattered glass.

Emily instinctively stepped back.

Her heart pounded.

She hadn't touched the glass.

She hadn't even been near the table.

But experience had taught her something important.

When something went wrong, servants were always blamed first.

"There she is," a woman sneered from across the room. "I knew she'd mess something up eventually."

Several guests laughed.

Emily lowered her eyes.

"Sorry," she whispered automatically.

The words escaped before she even thought about them.

Years of humiliation had trained her to apologize for things that weren't her fault.

The estate manager, Victoria Langley, stormed across the ballroom.

Her high heels clicked sharply against the marble floor.

"What happened here?" she demanded.

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked at the broken glass.

Then at Emily.

That was enough.

"You did this?"

Emily shook her head.

"No, ma'am."

Victoria's face hardened.

"Then why are you standing here?"

"I was serving guests."

Victoria grabbed the tray from her hands.

"You've been slow all evening."

"I'm sorry."

"There you go again."

The guests watched with amusement.

Emily felt her cheeks burn.

Her swollen feet trembled beneath her.

Then Victoria noticed something.

Emily's shoes.

Or rather, the lack of them.

One of the cheap shoes provided by the staff had split apart hours ago.

The other had become impossible to wear because of the swelling.

So Emily had quietly removed them.

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"You dare walk barefoot in front of our guests?"

The ballroom erupted with whispers.

Emily looked down.

"I couldn't—"

"Enough."

Victoria pointed toward the floor.

"Kneel down and clean it."

Right here.

In front of everyone.

A seven-month-pregnant woman slowly lowered herself to the cold marble while wealthy guests watched in silence.

Not one person intervened.

Not one.

Then a deep voice suddenly echoed from the entrance.

"Why is that woman on her knees?"

May you like

Every head turned.

The owner of Hawthorne Estate had arrived.
