Chapter 2: The Owner's Secret

Chapter 2: The Owner's Secret

The ballroom immediately fell silent.

Richard Hawthorne rarely attended his own events.

Billionaire.

Philanthropist.

Founder of one of the largest business empires in the country.

People practically moved out of his way as he walked across the room.

Victoria quickly forced a smile.

"Mr. Hawthorne, it's just a small incident."

Richard ignored her.

His eyes remained fixed on Emily.

For a moment, nobody understood why.

Then his face changed.

Shock.

Disbelief.

Pain.

His gaze dropped to the small silver necklace around Emily's neck.

A necklace shaped like a tiny star.

The color drained from his face.

"Where did you get that?" he asked quietly.

Emily looked confused.

"My necklace?"

"Answer me."

The room held its breath.

"It belonged to my mother."

Richard staggered backward.

Twenty-five years earlier, his infant daughter had disappeared during a tragic kidnapping attempt.

Authorities searched for months.

Then years.

Eventually, everyone assumed she had died.

Everyone except Richard.

He had spent decades searching.

And the last photograph of his missing daughter showed the same silver star necklace.

The one custom-made by his late wife.

The one that should not exist anywhere else.

Richard approached slowly.

"What was your mother's name?"

Emily swallowed.

"Sarah Carter."

Tears immediately filled Richard's eyes.

Sarah.

The nanny who had vanished with his daughter all those years ago.

The woman authorities believed had betrayed the family.

The woman Richard later discovered had actually sacrificed her life protecting the child.

The room watched in stunned silence.

Victoria's confident smile disappeared.

Richard's voice trembled.

"Emily... look at me."

She did.

And for the first time, he saw his wife's eyes staring back at him.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same face.

After twenty-five years.

Richard Hawthorne finally whispered the words he had dreamed of saying.

"My God..."

He turned toward the crowd.

"This woman is not a servant."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Richard's voice cracked.

May you like

"She is my daughter."

The ballroom exploded into chaos.
