Chapter 1: The First Word

Leo's lips trembled.

For one endless second, no sound came.

Then, barely louder than a whisper...

"Mom..."

The single word echoed through the silent penthouse.

Camryn froze.

Matteo's breath caught in his throat.

Every security guard standing outside the living room looked toward the child, unable to believe what they had heard.

Leo blinked, confused by the tears suddenly filling his own eyes.

He reached up with one tiny hand and gently touched Camryn's cheek.

"You came back," he whispered.

Camryn felt her heart shatter.

She had never seen this little boy before today.

Yet the desperate hope in his eyes was unmistakable.

"I'm sorry," she said softly, fighting her own tears. "I'm not your mommy."

Leo stared at her.

His little face crumpled.

For a terrifying second Matteo thought the familiar storm was returning.

Instead...

Leo simply buried himself against her shoulder again.

"You smell like her."

The words struck Matteo harder than any bullet ever had.

His late wife, Isabella, had always carried the scent of lavender soap.

Camryn's inexpensive laundry detergent held almost the same fragrance.

It was enough.

Enough for a broken child whose memories had become tangled with grief.

Matteo slowly stepped forward.

His voice, usually capable of terrifying entire boardrooms, was almost unrecognizable.

"My son hasn't spoken since the day his mother died."

Camryn looked at him in disbelief.

She glanced down at Leo, who had already fallen asleep against her shoulder from emotional exhaustion.

"He wasn't angry," she whispered.

"He was scared."

Those four words cut through every diagnosis Matteo had received over the past two years.

No one had ever said them before.

Because everyone had tried to fix Leo.

No one had simply tried to understand him.
