Chapter 1: The Secret Beneath the Fever

Chapter 1: The Secret Beneath the Fever

Michael stood frozen in the corridor outside the emergency room doors.

The old man’s words echoed in his mind like a fracture that refused to heal.

She isn’t just my granddaughter.

“What are you saying?” Michael’s voice was sharp now, controlled—but barely.

The old man looked down at his shaking hands.

“Six years ago… your patient file didn’t tell you everything.”

Michael’s brow tightened. “What file?”

The man swallowed hard.

“The woman who died in childbirth that night… she didn’t die alone.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

Michael’s breath caught.

“That’s impossible,” he said instantly. “We did everything we could. The records—”

“The records were changed,” the old man interrupted quietly.

A heavy silence followed.

Then, like a blade sliding in slowly—

“She gave birth to twins.”

Michael’s world collapsed into stillness.

Twin?

No.

That wasn’t possible. He remembered every detail of that night. The emergency. The loss. The single infant declared deceased minutes after birth.

Or so he had been told.

His voice dropped.

“Where is the second child?”

The old man’s eyes filled with tears again.

“She’s the girl in there.”

A distant monitor beep echoed behind the emergency doors, as if answering for them.

Michael stepped back.

“No…” he whispered. “No, I signed the death certificate myself…”

The old man shook his head.

“You signed what they put in front of you.”

A long silence stretched between them.

Then—

A scream came from the ER.

“CODE BLUE—ROOM THREE!”

May you like

Michael snapped back to reality.

And ran.
