One year later, the family gathered to celebrate Emma's birthday.
The house was filled with balloons, gifts, and laughter.
As everyone sang "Happy Birthday," Emma stood between her father and Sophie.
The guests noticed something different.
Whenever someone referred to Sophie as Emma's stepmother, the little girl immediately corrected them.
"That's not my stepmom."
People would smile.
"Oh? Then who is she?"
Emma would proudly answer the same way every time.

Later that evening, Emma climbed onto a chair to make an important announcement.
