Chapter 1: The Day She Finally Sat Down

Chapter 1: The Day She Finally Sat Down
Three weeks after that conversation, Daniel noticed something strange.
His wife, Emma, was standing in the kitchen at midnight.
The house was silent.
Their children were asleep.
The dishes were done.
The laundry was folded.
Nothing needed her attention.
Yet there she stood, staring at a handwritten list.
"What are you doing?" Daniel asked softly.
Emma looked up as if she had been caught doing something important.
"Just making sure I don't forget tomorrow."
Daniel glanced at the page.
School lunches.
Dentist appointment.
Soccer practice.
Birthday gift for a classmate.
Grocery items.
Pay electricity bill.
Call pediatrician.
Twenty-three tasks.
For a single day.
"You know you could do some of this tomorrow."
Emma smiled weakly.
"I know."
But neither of them believed it.
That night Daniel couldn't sleep.
For the first time, he realized his wife wasn't simply busy.
She was carrying an entire family inside her mind.
The next Saturday, he did something unexpected.
He took the children out of the house.
No plans.
No instructions.
No questions.
No phone calls.
Before leaving, he handed Emma a small note.
It read:
"For the next six hours, nothing is your responsibility."
Emma laughed when she read it.
Then she cried.
Because she couldn't remember the last time someone had given her permission to stop.
For the first hour she cleaned.
For the second hour she organized a closet.
For the third hour she sat on the couch and felt guilty.
Only during the fourth hour did she finally do something she hadn't done in years.
Nothing.
She simply sat by the window.
And watched the afternoon sunlight move across the floor.
It felt unfamiliar.
May you like
But it also felt wonderful.
For the first time in a long time, she remembered what peace felt like.
