Chapter 2: The Question That Changed Everything

Chapter 2: The Question That Changed Everything
Months passed.
Daniel began noticing small changes.
Emma smiled more.
She slept better.
She laughed more often.
But the biggest change came during a family dinner.
Their twelve-year-old daughter, Lily, looked at her mother and asked:
"Mom, why do you always help everyone else before yourself?"
The table fell quiet.
Emma opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she didn't have an answer.
Or maybe she did.
And it hurt too much to say.
Finally she whispered:
"I guess that's what moms do."
Lily frowned.
"But who helps Mom?"
Nobody spoke.
The question hung in the air.
Simple.
Honest.
Impossible to ignore.
That evening, after the children went to bed, Emma sat alone on the porch.
She thought about every year she had spent putting herself last.
Every dream postponed.
Every hobby abandoned.
Every need dismissed.
Not because anyone demanded it.
Because she believed love required it.
But what if it didn't?
What if being a good mother didn't mean disappearing?
What if her children needed something more valuable than endless sacrifice?
What if they needed an example?
The next morning Emma signed up for a painting class.
A tiny decision.
Almost insignificant.
Yet when she picked up a paintbrush again, something inside her awakened.
A part of herself she thought motherhood had taken away.
May you like
But it hadn't.
It had simply been waiting for her to come back.
