Chapter 15 - The Blackwood Children ProjectAdrian felt immediate fear.

“Explain.”

Luis looked toward Claire.

“The project began thirty years ago.”

Vincent funded it privately.

“What was it?”

“A behavioral research program.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“On children?”

Luis nodded.

“Not physically harmful experiments.”

“Observation.”

“Education.”

“Psychological profiling.”

“Family influence.”

Claire looked disgusted.

“Without consent?”

“Sometimes.”

Thomas stared at Luis.

“I never knew this.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

Luis continued.

“Vincent believed leadership could be predicted.”

“He studied children from powerful families.”

“He wanted to know who would become loyal.”

“Who would rebel.”

“Who could be manipulated.”

Adrian thought of the cameras.

“Sophie.”

Luis shook his head.

“She wasn’t part of the original project.”

“Then why watch her?”

“Because Vincent restarted it.”

Claire stepped forward.

“When?”

“After Adrian took control of the company.”

Adrian understood.

“He wanted to predict what I would do.”

Luis nodded.

“He watched people around you.”

“Claire.”

“Sophie.”

“Daniel.”

“Thomas.”

“Everyone.”

Adrian looked at the archive shelves.

“Evidence is here.”

“Yes.”

“If exposed, Blackwood Industries collapses.”

“Possibly.”

“Then let it.”

Vincent’s voice came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

He stood there alone.

No weapon visible.

“You say that because you have never had ten thousand employees depending on your decisions.”

Adrian faced him.

“I have them depending on mine every day.”

Vincent entered.

“And you think destroying the company helps them?”

“No.”

“Then listen.”

Luis stood.

Vincent’s eyes moved toward him.

“You finally confessed.”

Luis looked at Daniel.

“I should have years ago.”

Vincent smiled without warmth.

“Cowardice disguised as love.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don’t talk to him.”

Vincent looked amused.

“Protecting the man who killed Eleanor?”

Daniel flinched.

Adrian spoke.

“Why did you restart the project?”

Vincent turned toward him.

“Because you were failing.”

Adrian laughed.

“Revenue doubled.”

“Debt dropped.”

“Employee retention improved.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Numbers.”

“You think success is numbers.”

“What is it to you?”

“Continuity.”

Vincent looked around the archive.

“I built a dynasty.”

“You turned it into a public relations exercise.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You built a prison and called it legacy.”

Vincent’s smile vanished.

Claire spoke.

“Why Sophie?”

Vincent looked at her.

“Because Sophie is extraordinary.”

Claire moved forward.

Adrian blocked her gently.

Vincent continued.

“She notices patterns.”

“She remembers conversations.”

“She solves problems.”

“She found the first key.”

Claire’s voice became cold.

“You watched my daughter because you thought she might be useful.”

“I watched her because intelligence should be cultivated.”

“You had no right.”

Vincent sighed.

“Rights.”

“Another word people use when they lack responsibility.”

Adrian had heard enough.

“You’re finished.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Am I?”

Adrian nodded to Daniel.

“Call federal investigators.”

“We release the archive.”

Vincent laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

He took a small remote from his pocket.

Adrian tensed.

Vincent pressed one button.

A screen activated.

Sophie appeared on camera.

She was sitting in the secure house north of the cottage.

Margaret sat beside her.

Two security officers were unconscious on the floor.

A masked man stood behind them.

Claire gasped.

Vincent raised one hand.

“They are safe.”

“For now.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You said this was family.”

“It is.”

“Then leave the child out of it.”

“I would prefer to.”

“Prefer?”

Vincent’s expression became serious.

“Open the final archive.”

“No.”

“Then Rachel Carter dies first.”

Claire froze.

Vincent changed the feed.

An older woman appeared in another room.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

Claire stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

Rachel looked into the camera.

She heard Claire’s voice through the system.

Her face broke.

“Claire.”

Claire moved toward the screen.

“You’re alive.”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I’m sorry.”

Vincent spoke.

“She returned yesterday.”

Marcus stared.

“You found her.”

“No.”

Vincent smiled.

“She found me.”

Rachel’s voice came through.

“I came because I knew he was alive.”

Claire looked overwhelmed.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Because he was watching you.”

Vincent turned off the screen.

“Touching.”

Adrian faced him.

“What do you want?”

“All archive copies.”

“The lake vault.”

“This room.”

“Rachel’s external copy.”

“And?”

Vincent looked at Adrian.

“Your resignation.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“There it is.”

“Money after all.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Control.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then Thomas.

For the first time, he realized something.

Vincent believed everyone in the room was still acting individually.

He expected betrayal.

Fear.

Self-preservation.

That was his weakness.

Adrian looked back at him.

“Fine.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Adrian kept his eyes on Vincent.

“I’ll give you everything.”

Vincent smiled.

“I knew you would eventually think like a Blackwood.”

Adrian answered calmly.

“No.”

“I’m finally going to use the one thing you never understood.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

Adrian looked around the room.

May you like

“Trust.”

Vincent’s smile disappeared.
