Chapter 7 - The Uncle Who Never DiedThe headlights stopped directly outside the cottage.

Adrian moved Sophie behind the stone fireplace.

Margaret stood beside her.

“Stay there.”

He looked through the window.

A black sedan sat beneath the pines.

One man stepped out.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark coat.

Adrian had seen photographs of Marcus Blackwood from before the boating accident.

The man outside looked twenty years older.

But the face was unmistakable.

Marcus.

Alive.

He approached the porch alone.

Adrian opened the door but remained behind the frame.

Marcus stopped.

For several seconds, uncle and nephew simply looked at each other.

“You look like Eleanor.”

Marcus said it quietly.

Adrian raised his weapon.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

Marcus glanced at the gun.

“So is your father.”

“Come inside slowly.”

Marcus obeyed.

Margaret reacted the moment she saw him.

“You.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“Hello, Margaret.”

She moved between him and Sophie.

“Stay away from her.”

Marcus looked at the child.

“I’m not here for Sophie.”

Adrian shut the door.

“Why are you here?”

“Vincent called me.”

Adrian laughed once.

“My dead father called my dead uncle.”

Marcus removed his coat.

“No weapons.”

Adrian checked him anyway.

Nothing.

“Why did you fake your death?”

Marcus sat.

“Because Vincent tried to kill me.”

Margaret immediately spoke.

“You helped him for years.”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not defend himself.

“I did.”

Adrian remained standing.

“With what?”

“Everything.”

Marcus looked at the archive box.

“Until Eleanor showed me what Vincent was becoming.”

Adrian felt the old anger return.

“What was he becoming?”

“A man who believed the Blackwood name placed him above consequences.”

Marcus looked at Sophie briefly.

“Eleanor wanted out.”

“I agreed to help.”

“Vincent discovered it.”

Margaret folded her arms.

“And then Eleanor died.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you know who did?”

Marcus did not answer immediately.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Did you know?”

“I suspected.”

“Who?”

“Thomas.”

Margaret reacted instantly.

“That’s a lie.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You still protect him.”

“He’s Claire’s father.”

Adrian watched Marcus’s expression.

No surprise.

“You knew.”

Marcus nodded.

“Thomas and Rachel Carter were together before Rachel died.”

Margaret looked toward Sophie.

“Not in front of her.”

Adrian agreed.

He led Sophie into the small upstairs bedroom.

Margaret stayed with her.

When Adrian returned, Marcus stood by the window.

“Thomas has Claire.”

Adrian said.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Vincent says he does.”

“Vincent lies even when the truth would serve him better.”

Adrian leaned against the table.

“Then tell me something useful.”

Marcus pointed toward the archive box.

“You have Eleanor’s letter.”

“Yes.”

“Did she mention the final vault?”

“Yes.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Then Vincent knows you can open it.”

“How?”

“Because only a direct Blackwood heir can access the biometric lock.”

Adrian frowned.

“Biometric?”

“The brass key gets you to the entrance.”

“The vault itself needs you.”

“Where is it?”

Marcus looked through the window toward the lake.

“Under the water.”

Adrian stared.

“Beneath this cottage?”

“Beneath the old boathouse.”

The blackbird returns to water.

Claire’s message made sense.

Adrian picked up the brass key.

“What’s in the vault?”

“The original contingency archive.”

“Proof of who killed Eleanor?”

Marcus nodded.

“And much more.”

“Then we open it.”

“No.”

Marcus answered too quickly.

Adrian noticed.

“Why not?”

“Because Vincent wants you to.”

“He wants the files.”

“He wants one particular file.”

“What file?”

Marcus looked at him.

“The succession agreement.”

Adrian frowned.

“Succession to what?”

“Blackwood Industries.”

“I already control the company.”

“Legally.”

Marcus looked almost amused.

“But Vincent built a mechanism into the original ownership structure.”

“If he can prove you knowingly concealed certain crimes, your voting authority transfers.”

“To whom?”

Marcus looked toward himself.

Adrian understood.

“You.”

“Not anymore.”

“Then who?”

Marcus’s eyes moved toward the staircase.

Adrian’s stomach dropped.

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

“Claire.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Why Claire?”

“Because Rachel Carter wasn’t simply Thomas Vale’s partner.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“She was Vincent’s legal wife before he married Eleanor.”

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“That’s impossible.”

“The marriage was sealed.”

“Hidden.”

“Never properly dissolved.”

“If exposed, it creates questions about inheritance.”

Adrian looked toward the staircase.

“And Claire?”

“Claire may have a claim to Blackwood assets through her mother’s estate.”

“This is insane.”

“It gets worse.”

Marcus took a folded document from his pocket.

He placed it on the table.

It was a copy of a birth certificate.

Claire Rachel Carter.

Father listed as Thomas Vale.

Mother listed as Rachel Carter.

At the bottom was a handwritten annotation.

BENEFICIARY: BLACKWOOD FAMILY TRUST.

Adrian looked up.

“Why?”

Marcus shook his head.

“I never found out.”

A vehicle suddenly approached.

Then another.

Daniel’s security team.

Adrian exhaled.

Marcus turned toward the door.

“You called them?”

“Of course.”

Marcus looked genuinely worried.

“You shouldn’t have.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Vincent still controls people inside Blackwood security.”

Adrian grabbed his radio.

“Daniel?”

No response.

He tried again.

“Daniel?”

Static.

Then Daniel’s voice appeared.

“Adrian, don’t open the door.”

A gunshot echoed outside.

Sophie screamed upstairs.

Adrian moved instantly.

“What happened?”

Daniel sounded breathless.

“We were followed.”

“By who?”

“Three vehicles.”

Marcus looked through the window.

“Vincent’s people.”

Adrian moved toward the back exit.

“We leave through the lake.”

Marcus stopped him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where they want you.”

A second gunshot echoed.

Glass shattered in the front window.

Everyone dropped.

Adrian looked toward the lake.

The old boathouse sat in darkness.

Then one small light switched on inside it.

Vincent’s voice returned through the cottage speaker.

“You have ten minutes, son.”

“Bring the key.”

“Bring Marcus.”

“And come to the vault.”

Adrian stared at the glowing boathouse.

May you like

Vincent continued.

“Or Claire disappears for good.”
