Chapter 4: The Price of Arrogance

Chapter 4: The Price of Arrogance

The following morning, the ballroom had been cleared of the party decorations, replaced by a chilling emptiness.

At the center of the room stood Claire Whitlock and her father, Richard. They were surrounded by a dozen of Daniel’s heavily armed enforcers. Claire looked pale, her designer gown swapped for a hastily thrown-on trench coat, her arrogance entirely drained.

The heavy doors opened.

Daniel walked in. Beside him walked Hannah. She was no longer wearing the black maid’s uniform. She wore a tailored, elegant navy dress, her chin held high, the uneven cut of her hair pinned back like a badge of honor.

"Daniel, please," Richard Whitlock stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "If this is about last night, I apologize for my daughter's behavior. It was unseemly, but to lock down our accounts, to seize our cargo ships—"

"Shut up," Daniel commanded. The room fell dead silent.

Claire looked at Hannah, her eyes wide with confusion and rising terror. "Daniel, why is she standing next to you? She's the help!"

Daniel turned to Hannah, his expression softening for a fraction of a second before he looked back at the Whitlocks.

"Allow me to formally introduce Hannah," Daniel said, his voice echoing off the marble floors. "Sister-in-law to the Carver family. Widow of my late brother, Aaron. And mother to my nephew."

All the blood rushed from Claire’s face. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the floor, a strangled gasp escaping her throat.

She had humiliated the mother of the Carver heir. She had paraded her cruelty in front of the most dangerous man in New England, targeting his own blood.

"Richard," Daniel continued, stepping forward. "You stole my money. I could forgive that. But you murdered my brother to cover your tracks."

"We didn't know!" Richard screamed, falling to his knees beside his weeping daughter. "He used the name Brooks! We didn't know he was a Carver!"

"It wouldn't have mattered if he was a beggar," Hannah spoke up, her voice clear and unwavering. She stepped out from behind Daniel's shadow. "He was a good man. And you took him from us."

The side doors opened. Two of Daniel's men walked in, supporting a bruised but very much alive Caleb Monroe.

"Caleb!" Hannah cried, rushing forward to embrace her brother.

Daniel looked down at the sobbing Whitlocks. "Your empire is gone, Richard. Your ships are mine. Your accounts are drained. And the police evidence my men compiled overnight has already been sent to the Feds." Daniel signaled to Marcus. "Get them out of my sight."

As the Whitlocks were dragged away, screaming and begging for mercy, Daniel turned back to Hannah and Caleb. For the first time in months, the heavy darkness over the Carver estate seemed to lift.
