Chapter 5: Sunshine and Shadows

Chapter 5: Sunshine and Shadows
Two Months Later
The winter sun cast a brilliant, warm glow across the freshly painted walls of the nursery in the East Wing of the Carver estate.
Hannah sat in a plush rocking chair, holding a tiny, sleeping bundle wrapped in a blue blanket. Little Aaron was perfect. He had his father’s nose and his mother’s thick, dark hair.
The door creaked open, and Daniel stepped inside. He had traded his usual tailored suits for a simple gray sweater, looking softer and more human than the ruthless boss the rest of the city feared.
"He's asleep," Hannah whispered, smiling down at her son.
Daniel walked over, looking down at his nephew with a reverence that bordered on holy. He gently reached out, letting the baby’s tiny fingers curl around his large, scarred thumb.
"Caleb called," Daniel said quietly. "He's settling into his new office well. The legitimate accounting firm suits him."
"Thank you, Daniel," she said, looking up at him. "For everything."
The Whitlocks were in federal prison, their legacy reduced to ashes. The debt was erased, the truth was out, and Aaron's memory had been honored.
Daniel crouched down beside the rocking chair, his eyes level with hers. "I promised Aaron I would look out for him. I failed. I won't fail him again. This house is yours, Hannah. For as long as you want it. You and the boy will never know fear, you will never know hunger, and no one will ever disrespect you again."
Hannah looked around the room. The walls had been painted a vibrant, sunshine yellow, exactly as Aaron had wanted.
May you like
"I know," she smiled, resting her hand lightly on Daniel's shoulder.
Outside, the cold winds of Providence howled against the glass, but inside the nursery, the sun had finally found its home.
