Chapter 10 - The Recording

The memory card contained one video.

Its timestamp was twenty-three years old.

Charles Harrington appeared on screen.

He looked sick.

But his voice was clear.

“If you are watching this, I am either dead or I was unable to reach the authorities.”

Emily sat beside Rosa while Detective Keller played the recording.

Margaret stood behind them.

Charles continued.

“My son Nathan is responsible for Claire’s death.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Rosa closed her eyes.

Emily stared at the screen.

Charles explained everything.

Nathan had discovered that Claire intended to divorce him.

She had also uncovered fraudulent transfers from a protected family trust.

Nathan had been moving money through shell companies.

Claire planned to expose him.

If the divorce happened before their daughter’s birth, Nathan would lose access to Claire’s inherited shares.

So he tampered with her car.

But Claire survived the first impact.

Charles had obtained a roadside security recording showing Nathan’s vehicle near the crash site.

He also had financial records proving Nathan paid a mechanic two days earlier.

The video continued.

“I confronted him.”

“He told me Claire’s death had solved a problem.”

Margaret began crying.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

“And then he threatened the child.”

Rosa’s fists tightened.

Charles continued.

“I sent Margaret to hide my granddaughter.”

“I believed it was the only way to keep her alive.”

Emily looked at Margaret.

“You helped him.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I helped Charles.”

“You also protected Nathan afterward.”

Her silence answered.

Charles’s final words were worse.

“There is another person involved.”

Everyone leaned forward.

“My attorney, Daniel Mercer, helped Nathan move the money.”

Emily frowned.

She knew that name.

Daniel Mercer had been the Harrington family lawyer for decades.

He had also written Emily and Nathan’s prenuptial agreement.

Charles continued.

“Mercer knows where every account is buried.”

“He also knows the truth about my granddaughter.”

The screen went black.

Detective Keller exhaled slowly.

“That changes everything.”

Emily’s phone buzzed.

A new message from Nathan.

Midnight.

Old Harrington textile mill.

Bring Rosa.

Bring the files.

No police.

Or Sofia dies.

Rosa stood.

“I’m going.”

Keller shook his head.

“You’ll be wired.”

Nathan sent another message.

And Emily comes too.

Emily read it twice.

Rosa looked at her.

“No.”

Emily did not hesitate.

“Yes.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“That is exactly why he expects me to obey.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“I’ll go.”

Nathan’s final message arrived.

Just the three women.

Emily looked toward the broken chandelier visible through the ballroom doors.

For years, Nathan had controlled every room he entered.

Every conversation.

Every secret.

Tonight, he had tried to turn fear into a weapon.

Emily placed a hand over her daughter.

Then she looked at Keller.

“Make copies of everything.”

“If we don’t come back, release it.”

Keller nodded.

Emily stood.

“And find Daniel Mercer.”

The detective’s expression changed.

“We already tried.”

Emily frowned.

“His office is empty.”

“When did he leave?”

“Security footage shows him leaving two hours before the chandelier fell.”

May you like

Rosa looked at Emily.

Mercer had known the plan before it happened.
