Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Money

Daniel Mercer had spent forty years presenting himself as the quiet architect behind the Harrington empire.

He negotiated acquisitions.

He settled lawsuits.

He attended weddings and funerals.

He knew every secret because people assumed lawyers only protected secrets.

Now he stood inside the abandoned mill with a gun trained on Nathan.

“The copies you brought are useless,” Mercer said.

Emily watched him carefully.

“You already have the originals?”

Mercer smiled.

“I have what matters.”

Nathan’s face twisted.

“You told me Charles destroyed the recording.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

“You helped me.”

“I protected the company.”

Nathan laughed.

“You stole from it.”

Mercer’s smile disappeared.

Emily remembered Charles’s recording.

Nathan had been moving money.

But Charles said Mercer helped him.

What if the direction had been reversed?

Emily said it aloud.

“You taught him how to steal.”

Mercer looked at her.

“Bright girl.”

Nathan turned toward him.

“You said the trust transfers were safe.”

“They were.”

“For me.”

Nathan raised his gun.

Mercer fired first.

The shot struck Nathan in the shoulder.

He fell.

Sofia screamed.

Rosa ran toward her.

Mercer aimed at Rosa.

“Stop.”

Rosa froze.

Emily saw Nathan crawling toward the fallen file box.

Blood spread across his jacket.

Mercer stepped toward Sofia.

“The problem with families is that they confuse inheritance with entitlement.”

Sofia glared at him.

“You killed Charles.”

Margaret gasped.

Mercer looked almost impressed.

“What makes you think that?”

“My grandfather found out you were stealing.”

Mercer tilted his head.

“He found out too late.”

Margaret whispered.

“You poisoned him.”

Mercer looked at her.

“Charles was already ill.”

“I merely shortened a difficult period.”

Nathan laughed weakly from the floor.

“So that’s why you wanted me blamed for everything.”

Mercer looked down at him.

“You made it very easy.”

Nathan’s eyes filled with rage.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he understood what it felt like to be used.

Mercer turned toward Emily.

“Where is the memory card?”

Emily’s heartbeat pounded in her ears.

“I don’t have it.”

Mercer lifted the gun toward Sofia.

“Try again.”

Emily stepped forward.

“I sent it to the police.”

Mercer’s expression sharpened.

Nathan laughed again.

“She beat you.”

Mercer fired into the floor beside him.

“Be quiet.”

Nathan flinched.

Emily realized something.

Mercer was afraid.

Not of Nathan.

Not of the police outside.

Of the recording.

Because the recording did not merely expose a murder.

May you like

It exposed the theft of an empire.

And Mercer had spent decades making sure no one understood that the Harrington family fortune was already gone.
