Chapter 1: The Father No One Expected

Chapter 1: The Father No One Expected

Silence swallowed the living room.

The young husband, Daniel Hayes, stared at the man standing before him.

His mother, Margaret Hayes, scoffed.

"And who exactly do you think you are, barging into my home with police officers?"

The visitor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he removed his leather gloves with deliberate calm before helping his pregnant daughter to her feet.

"Gently," he whispered.

"You've been standing too long."

Emily could barely hold back her tears.

"I'm sorry, Dad..."

He looked at the red handprint on her cheek.

His jaw tightened.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Daniel suddenly found his voice.

"Sir... this is a misunderstanding."

The older man finally turned toward him.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

The color drained from Daniel's face.

Everyone in the city knew the Bennett family.

Richard Bennett wasn't simply wealthy.

He owned the largest construction and logistics corporation in the state.

His companies employed thousands.

His foundation financed hospitals, schools, and legal aid centers.

Margaret laughed nervously.

"So... you're really her father?"

Richard nodded once.

"Yes."

"But today, I am not here as a businessman."

"I'm here as a father."

He looked directly at the police officers.

"Officer, please document every visible injury."

One officer photographed the bruise on Emily's face.

Another collected the broken ceramic plate lying beside the dining table.

Margaret suddenly protested.

"This is a family matter!"

"No," Richard replied.

"It stopped being a family matter the moment violence entered this house."

Daniel stepped forward.

"I lost my temper."

Richard's voice remained frighteningly calm.

"And my daughter lost her trust."

Emily slowly walked upstairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

She packed only what truly belonged to her.

A small suitcase.

Her prenatal vitamins.

Baby clothes she had secretly bought.

An ultrasound picture.

And the teddy bear Daniel had given her during happier days.

She looked at it for several seconds...

...before placing it gently inside the trash can.

Some memories deserved to stay behind.

When she came downstairs, Richard reached for her suitcase.

"Ready?"

She nodded.

Daniel rushed toward the door.

"Emily, please!"

"I love you."

She stopped without turning around.

"No."

"You loved having someone who always forgave you."

"That's not the same thing."

The front door closed.

For the first time since her wedding...

Emily walked away without asking anyone's permission.
