Chapter 2: The Truth About Caleb

Chapter 2: The Truth About Caleb

For nearly an hour, neither of them moved.

Roman sat behind his desk.

Emma sat across from him.

And between them lay the photograph.

Finally, Roman spoke.

"Caleb never stole from me."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

Roman's jaw tightened.

"That's what everyone believes. That's what I allowed them to believe."

The confession shocked even him.

"He discovered something."

"What?"

"There was a traitor inside my organization."

Roman's eyes darkened.

"Someone close to me was laundering money and selling information to rival families."

Emma listened carefully.

"Caleb found proof."

"And then?"

"He disappeared."

The room fell silent.

Roman stood and walked toward the window.

"For seventeen months, I thought he ran."

His voice cracked.

"But Caleb wasn't a coward."

Emma suddenly remembered something.

The night before Caleb vanished.

He had handed her a small metal box.

Told her to keep it safe.

Told her never to open it.

She had forgotten about it.

The box was still hidden in her apartment.

Emma looked at Roman.

"I think Caleb left something."

Roman turned immediately.

"What?"

"A box."

Hope flashed across his face for the first time.

That same night, Roman's security team escorted Emma home.

The box was exactly where she had left it.

Inside was a flash drive.

Roman plugged it into a laptop.

The files appeared instantly.

Bank records.

Names.

Transactions.

Photographs.

Evidence.

Enough evidence to expose the traitor.

And one final video.

Caleb appeared on screen.

Exhausted.

Scared.

But alive.

"If you're watching this," he said, "I probably didn't make it."

Emma covered her mouth.

Roman couldn't look away.

Caleb smiled weakly.

"Roman... you were always trying to protect me."

His eyes filled with tears.

"But this time I was trying to protect you."

The video ended.

And for the first time in seventeen months, Roman finally knew the truth.
