Chapter 3: Family

Chapter 3: Family

Three months later.

The city of Chicago was changing.

The traitor had been exposed.

Several criminal networks had collapsed.

And for the first time in years, Roman Callahan seemed different.

Not softer.

Just... lighter.

Emma still worked at the restaurant.

By choice.

But now she had a better apartment.

Reliable childcare.

And people she could call when she needed help.

People who felt like family.

Because they were.

One warm afternoon, Lily ran across the park laughing.

"Uncle Roman!"

Roman looked up from a bench.

The little girl launched herself into his arms.

He caught her effortlessly.

The terrifying mafia boss who made grown men tremble smiled like an ordinary uncle.

Emma watched from nearby.

A feeling of peace settled over her.

Roman walked toward her carrying Lily.

The little girl rested her head on his shoulder.

"She missed you," Emma said.

Roman smirked.

"I saw her yesterday."

"She says she misses you every day."

"Smart kid."

Emma laughed.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Roman handed her a folded envelope.

"What is this?"

"Open it."

Inside was a legal document.

Emma stared.

Confused.

Then shocked.

It established a trust fund for Lily.

Enough money to pay for school.

College.

Anything she would ever need.

Emma's eyes widened.

"Roman..."

"Caleb should have been here to do it himself."

His voice was quiet.

"He loved her before she was born."

Emma looked away, fighting tears.

Roman gently touched Lily's hair.

"She's the last piece of him I have left."

Emma smiled.

"No."

Roman looked at her.

"You have more than that."

For a second he didn't understand.

Then he looked at Emma.

At Lily.

At the small family standing together beneath the afternoon sun.

And something in his expression changed.

Because after years of loss, violence, and loneliness...

Roman finally realized Caleb had left him one final gift.

Not money.

Not evidence.

Not revenge.

A family.

May you like

And sometimes, that was worth more than everything else.
