Chapter 1: The Face She Thought She Lost

Chapter 1: The Face She Thought She Lost

The old woman’s eyes stayed locked on the little girl in the shimmering silver dress.

The mansion’s grand hall felt suddenly too large, too quiet—like the air itself had frozen in place with her. Her trembling fingers lifted slightly, as if she were reaching for a memory rather than a child.

The little girl stood still near the grand staircase, clutching a small white bouquet. She looked no older than seven. Her wide eyes, uncertain but gentle, reflected the chandelier light like broken stars.

Behind her, voices of guests softened into distant noise.

The old woman took one step forward.

Then another.

“No…” she whispered, barely audible. “It can’t be…”

Her voice cracked on the edge of something long buried—something she had refused to dig up for twenty years.

The child tilted her head. “Grandma?”

That single word shattered something inside her.

The old woman staggered, gripping the edge of a nearby table for support. Her vision blurred—not from age, but from recognition she had spent decades trying to forget.

The silver dress.

The small birthmark on the child’s wrist.

And those eyes…

Those exact eyes she had seen once before—on a baby she was told had died the night her daughter was taken from her.

A sound escaped her throat, half sob, half prayer.

“Lila…?”

The room seemed to tilt.

And somewhere behind them, a man in a tailored black suit froze at the doorway—watching.

Watching like he had been waiting for this moment all along.
