Chapter 1: The Echo After the Arrest

Chapter 1: The Echo After the Arrest
The restaurant didn’t go back to normal after they left.
It only pretended to.
The officers had taken Victor out through the side entrance, but the air he left behind stayed—heavy, disbelieving, poisoned with the kind of silence that doesn’t know where to go next.
Margaret Whitlock was still seated.
Not because she had nowhere to go.
But because for the first time in her life, she looked like she didn’t understand how standing up would change anything.
Emily sat across from me, hands folded tightly in her lap. She wasn’t shaking anymore. That worried me more than when she was.
Because silence like that usually meant shock had finished its job—and something else was beginning.
“Do you want to leave?” I asked her.
She hesitated.
Then shook her head.
“I don’t want to run again.”
That sentence landed differently than anything Victor had ever said in this room.
Margaret finally spoke, her voice stripped of its earlier sharpness.
“You think this ends cleanly?” she said. “You think dragging him out of here makes you righteous?”
I looked at her.
“No,” I said. “It just makes it true.”
Her jaw tightened, but there was no fight left in her words. Only habit.
Emily stood slowly.
“I remember everything you said,” she told Margaret quietly.
Margaret didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing left to correct.
Outside, cameras were already gathering. Someone had leaked something—there’s always someone. The story wasn’t private anymore. It was growing teeth.
And I knew something worse than court was coming next.
Public opinion.

It never cares who is right.
Only who looks believable.
