Chapter 2: The Cost of Truth

Chapter 2: The Cost of Truth

Two days later, the headlines were everywhere.

Victor Whitlock: Arrested.
Allegations Confirmed.
High Society Scandal Breaks Open.

But Emily didn’t read them.

She stayed in a quiet apartment I rented under a name no one would trace easily. Curtains drawn. Phone off most of the time.

The world outside was loud.

Inside, she was learning what silence actually feels like when it isn’t fear anymore.

It’s recovery.

I found her sitting by the window on the third day, staring at nothing.

“They’re saying I ruined his life,” she said without turning.

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because that’s the part no one prepares victims for.

“You didn’t ruin anything,” I finally said. “You exposed what was already broken.”

She nodded slightly, but I could see the doubt still living in her shoulders.

“I keep thinking… what if I stayed quiet?” she whispered.

I pulled a chair beside her.

“Then he would’ve kept going,” I said. “And you would’ve kept disappearing.”

That word made her flinch.

Disappearing.

She had been doing it slowly for years, without even noticing.

Footsteps, choices, words trimmed shorter every time someone got angry.

Until there was almost nothing left of her voice.

May you like

Almost.

But not gone.
