Chapter 13 - The Son She Was Willing to Sacrifice.

By morning, every major news outlet was outside Sterling headquarters.

The story had exploded.

Human remains discovered beneath Sterling Memorial.

Historic military procurement fraud.

Missing evidence.

A billionaire matriarch sought for questioning.

And now court documents claiming Ethan Sterling was mentally incompetent.

Ethan sat in a conference room staring at the petition.

His hands shook.

Maya stood across from him.

For the first time since the banquet, anger was not the strongest thing she felt toward him.

Pity was.

“She prepared this before last night.”

Ethan nodded.

“The filing was drafted three weeks ago.”

Maya understood.

“Before you found my file?”

“No.”

“I found your file six months ago.”

He looked sick.

“My mother must have known I was asking questions.”

Marcus entered carrying the Crown Ledger.

Federal investigators had copied it overnight.

“The ledger confirms Victoria blackmailed dozens of people.”

Ethan looked at him.

“My father too?”

“Your father helped build it.”

Marcus sat.

“But later entries are in Victoria’s handwriting.”

Maya remembered the signature.

V.S.

There was no pretending anymore.

Ethan leaned back.

“I spent my whole life defending her.”

Maya said nothing.

“She told me everything she did was for the family.”

He laughed bitterly.

“I guess I never asked what she meant by family.”

Maya looked through the glass wall at Sterling employees gathering outside.

“Maybe she meant the name.”

Ethan nodded.

“The name.”

He looked at Maya.

“I chose it too.”

She met his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word hurt him.

But she did not soften it.

He deserved the truth.

“You chose the merger over telling me what you found.”

“Yes.”

“You let her humiliate me.”

“Yes.”

“You stayed silent.”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

Maya looked away.

“I don’t know whether I ever will.”

Ethan nodded.

“I know.”

A company attorney rushed in.

“The emergency board meeting starts in forty minutes.”

Ethan stood.

“My mother can’t attend.”

“She doesn’t need to.”

The attorney placed a tablet on the table.

Victoria appeared by encrypted video.

She was sitting somewhere dark.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Not kidnapped.

Not frightened.

Maya felt fury rise.

Victoria smiled.

“Good morning.”

Ethan stared.

“You staged the airport footage.”

Victoria ignored the accusation.

“I understand you have had an exhausting evening.”

“You tried to have me declared incompetent.”

“For your protection.”

Ethan laughed.

“There it is.”

Victoria’s smile faded.

“I have devoted my life to protecting you.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You protected obedience.”

Victoria looked toward Maya.

“This is what she has done to you.”

Maya stepped closer to the camera.

“I didn’t force him to read your court filing.”

Victoria’s eyes became cold.

“You should have remained grateful for what we gave you.”

Maya almost smiled.

“You gave me nothing.”

“We gave you a name.”

“No.”

“You gave me a married surname.”

“My name existed before I ever met your son.”

Victoria’s expression twitched.

Maya continued.

“Amelia Rose Vance.”

For the first time, Maya said it publicly.

Her birth name.

Marcus’s eyes filled with pride.

Victoria leaned toward the camera.

“You have no idea what carrying that name will cost you.”

Maya stared back.

“I already paid.”

“The cost was my mother.”

Silence.

Then Victoria made her mistake.

“She should have handed over the files.”

Everyone in the room froze.

Ethan stared at his mother.

Marcus slowly activated the recorder on his phone.

Maya remained calm.

“So Eleanor deserved what happened?”

Victoria realized too late.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You said she should have handed over the files.”

“She had a child.”

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“She had responsibilities.”

Maya felt sick.

“My mother was shot because she refused to protect your crimes.”

Victoria stood.

“You know nothing about that night.”

“Then tell me.”

“You were a screaming toddler.”

“You remember nothing.”

Marcus’s eyes widened.

Ethan looked toward him.

Maya felt the room tilt.

Victoria had just admitted seeing her there.

Maya whispered.

“You remember me.”

Victoria stopped.

Maya stepped closer.

“You remember me at the lake house.”

Victoria’s face went blank.

The call disconnected.

Marcus looked toward Hale.

“Please tell me you recorded that.”

“Three systems.”

Hale smiled grimly.

“That was an admission she was present.”

The attorney entered again.

“Board meeting has begun.”

Ethan straightened his jacket.

For the first time he looked less like Victoria’s son and more like a man making his own decision.

“What happens if the merger dies?”

“Sterling Holdings could lose billions.”

Ethan looked at Maya.

Then Marcus.

Then the Crown Ledger.

“Kill it.”

The attorney stared.

“Excuse me?”

“Withdraw Sterling from the merger.”

“You’ll trigger lawsuits.”

“I know.”

“The board may remove you.”

“I know.”

“You could lose control of the company.”

Ethan looked toward the giant Sterling logo on the wall.

“Maybe control is exactly what has been killing this family.”

He entered the boardroom.

Cameras flashed outside.

Twenty-three directors sat around the table.

Ethan placed one document in front of them.

“I am withdrawing my support for the Vaughn merger effective immediately.”

Chaos erupted.

He continued.

“I am also requesting an independent forensic audit of every Sterling defense contract from 1995 onward.”

The room exploded with shouting.

Ethan raised his voice.

“And I am resigning as chief executive officer.”

Maya stared through the glass.

She had not expected that.

Neither had Victoria.

Because thirty seconds later every television screen in the boardroom went black.

Then Victoria appeared.

Her voice filled the room.

“You will do no such thing.”

Ethan looked up.

“I already did.”

Victoria stared at her son.

“You have just destroyed your inheritance.”

Ethan looked through the glass at Maya.

Then back at his mother.

May you like

“No.”

“For the first time in my life, I stopped letting it destroy me.”
