Chapter 16 - The Secret Eleanor Came to Protect.

Marcus read Charles Sterling’s handwritten note five times.
“Why her mother came to the lake house.”
Maya sat across from him at the kitchen table.
“What else could it mean?”
Marcus did not answer immediately.
He was remembering something.
“Eleanor called me two days before she disappeared.”
“What did she say?”
“She asked whether your father had ever contacted me.”
Maya froze.
“My father?”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I assumed she meant your biological father.”
“You didn’t know him?”
“No.”
Maya stared.
“You never met him?”
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Eleanor refused to tell me his name.”
“Why?”
“She said he was involved in sensitive government work.”
Maya almost laughed.
“Apparently secrecy was a family hobby.”
Marcus smiled sadly.
“She promised she would tell me when it was safe.”
“But she never did.”
Maya’s thoughts raced.
“Could my father be connected to Sterling?”
Marcus looked toward the Crown Ledger copy.
“Maybe.”
Federal investigators searched Eleanor’s red notebook.
Near the final pages they found initials repeated beside several Project Harbor transactions.
J.V.
Maya frowned.
“Who is J.V.?”
Marcus searched old personnel files.
The result made him sit back.
Jonathan Vaughn.
Former Army procurement officer.
Later founder of Vaughn Logistics.
The same company Sterling Holdings had been trying to merge with.
Maya’s blood ran cold.
“The merger.”
Marcus nodded.
“This entire banquet was announcing a merger between the two companies tied to Project Harbor.”
Maya stared at him.
“My father was a Vaughn?”
“We don’t know that.”
But the possibility was impossible to ignore.
Jonathan Vaughn had died in 2005.
His company was now controlled by his younger brother, William Vaughn.
Investigators obtained a sealed personnel file.
Inside was a photograph.
Maya’s breath caught.
Jonathan had her eyes.
Her jaw.
Even the slight curve of her smile.
DNA records confirmed it within twenty-four hours using samples from a preserved military medical file.
Jonathan Vaughn was Maya’s biological father.
Maya sat alone when Marcus told her.
Another family name.
Another dead parent.
Another piece of herself recovered too late.
“Did he know about me?”
Marcus handed her a letter.
It had been found among Eleanor’s locker documents but initially overlooked because it carried no name.
Jonathan had written it.
“Ellie.”
“I can’t keep pretending Project Harbor is only corruption.”
“My brother knows.”
“Charles knows.”
“If they discover Amelia is mine, William will use her to silence us both.”
Maya closed her eyes.
William Vaughn.
The current chairman of Vaughn Logistics.
The man who had stood on the banquet stage only hours before Victoria humiliated her.
The man who had watched silently.
Marcus continued reading.
“I have placed my shares in a hidden trust for Amelia.”
“She must never know until the Harbor investigation is finished.”
“If something happens to me, the trust survives.”
Maya looked up.
“Shares?”
Marcus searched corporate records.
The answer stunned everyone.
Jonathan Vaughn had owned thirty-one percent of Vaughn Logistics.
Those shares had been placed in an irrevocable trust for his daughter.
But after his death, the trust had supposedly transferred to charity because he had no legal heirs.
Someone had falsified the beneficiary record.
Maya stared at Marcus.
“Who controls those shares now?”
“William Vaughn.”
The merger suddenly made sense.
Sterling and Vaughn were not simply combining businesses.
They were consolidating control over assets stolen from Maya’s inheritance.
Maya laughed in disbelief.
“Victoria called me worthless.”
Marcus almost smiled.
“Apparently she was insulting the largest hidden shareholder at her own merger.”
But Maya did not care about the money.
Not yet.
She cared about the banquet.
William Vaughn had been there.
He had looked directly at her.
Had he known?
Security footage answered.
Moments before Victoria slapped Maya, William had received a message.
He looked toward Maya.
Then toward Victoria.
Then walked toward the exit.
He had known something was about to happen.
Hale brought him in for questioning.
William arrived with four attorneys.
He denied everything.
Maya entered the interview room.
His face changed.
Only for a second.
“You look like Jonathan.”
Maya sat across from him.
“So I’ve heard.”
William adjusted his cufflinks.
“I’m sorry for what happened to you.”
“Which part?”
He said nothing.
“My mother being shot?”
Silence.
“My childhood being erased?”
Silence.
“My inheritance being stolen?”
His attorney interrupted.
“My client does not acknowledge that characterization.”
Maya ignored him.
“Did you know I was Jonathan’s daughter?”
William looked at her.
“No.”
Maya placed the photograph of herself from Charles Sterling’s file on the table.
“Your signature is on the back.”
William froze.
Marcus watched through the glass.
Maya leaned forward.
“You knew.”
William’s face hardened.
“Jonathan was reckless.”
“He endangered the company.”
“He wanted to confess.”
“To fraud?”
“To everything.”
William lowered his voice.
“Thousands of jobs depended on Vaughn Logistics.”
Maya almost laughed.
Again the same excuse.
Jobs.
Families.
Reputation.
Anything except truth.
“My parents were going to expose you.”
William said nothing.
“Did you help kill them?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
“Then what did you do?”
William looked toward his attorneys.
One whispered that he should stop talking.
Maya stood.
“Fine.”
She walked toward the door.
Then William spoke.
“I told Charles where Eleanor would be.”
Maya stopped.
The room became silent.
William continued.
“I thought he would scare her.”
“You gave them your brother’s family.”
“My brother was destroying everything our father built.”
“You stole his daughter’s inheritance.”
“I protected the company.”
Maya turned.
“You keep using different words for theft.”
William’s face twisted.
“You think that money belongs to you?”
“No.”
Maya stepped closer.
“I think the truth belongs to everyone you stole it from.”
Federal prosecutors entered.
William’s attorneys erupted.
He was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and financial crimes.
But before officers took him away, he smiled at Maya.
“You still don’t understand.”
Maya frowned.
“Understand what?”
“Jonathan didn’t die from a heart attack.”
Marcus went still.
Maya’s stomach dropped.
May you like
William smiled bitterly.
“Victoria Sterling killed your father too.”
